Poll question: Atkins' section of store - assisting or stealing?
I saw this bag of low-carb crisps for $1.99. $1.99 for ONE OUNCE. 3% carbs.

Went back to the chips aisle. Found a 13.5oz bag of baked doritos. 7% carbs, a lot less protein (5/6th less), and I think it had fewer calories. No soy protein though, and it's the soy that gave the expensive brand any protein whatsoever.

The solution? Buy the doritos and eat fewer of them. Dip the dorito in low-fat cottage cheese and you've got something that's almost healthy!!

I can buy a 12oz bag of vegetarian meat product in crumble form for $3.69 as well...

Indeed, I found many Atkins diet 'foods' to be very expensive, and if I bother to look at foods I normally purchase, either eating less of those makes up for carb difference OR are similar in carbs content in the first place (3% vs 5%, big deal), making me wonder big-time what the marketing jackals are up to.

Why are the prices so high? "Dr." Atkins made his money back and more from all the research he did by all those tens of thousands of books he sold... Whazzup?! (Oh, and telling a person it's okay to eat all the high-in-cholesterol food is a sheer nutcase of a lunatic, not a doctor. Ditto for high protein foods which are exorbitant in their fat content. Low-fat meats also are high in protein but are far lower in the nasty stuff.)

1. It's a mix of factors
You have the basic research cost to cover; you have the greed of the manufacturers who realize it's a "hot" diet and they can charge more; and you have the very real costs of limited production.

In a couple years, if the diet continues to be popular, Atkins-styled food will become as regular priced as low-fat has become. Remember when "low-fat" foods first came out? You paid a premium for those, too.

I'd rather see people just go shopping in the produce department and the meat counter, and not get so much pre-made foodstuffs, but I'll admit, when it comes to snacks, pre-made processed food is hard to pass up. ;-)
