What's in your car?
Tell us about the stuff you habitually carry around in your car.

Me: Book of maps. Yoga mat. Music tapes (yes, it's an older car with a TAPE DECK, gasp.) Emergency car kit with flares and whatnot. Sewing kit and a lint brush. (also for emergencies, of the wardrobe kind). Umbrella. Oh, and there's usually a couple of coffee cups in there because I have my morning cuppa on the way to work and I tend to leave them in the car.

You?

6. dog hair..
and if we're driving it, usually the dog to go with it. A blanket to attempt to keep the hair off the rear seat..and a large terry cover for the passenger front seat. He likes to sit in the passenger seat while he waits for us. Not much else in the passenger area except for a window scraper/snow brush...everything else is kept in the trunk to avoid becoming dog chew.

Edited on Sat Jan-14-06 11:45 AM by neweurope
thingamajig - useful for putting under wheel when the going gets rough and to cook on when on the road. Bird food. Horse food. A mattress (it's a little bus). One or two empty bottles of mineral water. A wind jacket. Maps of my area (also of Ireland and Poland, the last two countries I visited... maps kind of LIKE to live in this car.) Emergency kit. Knife. Blanket.

28. My English isn't good enough *grml*
It's that top flat grid thing of the barbecue that you put the meat on. You can put that under the wheels (good in ice and snow, also on grassy slopes uphill as I've found out). Also you can prop it up with four stones, make a fire underneath (when I travel I usually have some coal with me, but wood will do) and place your meat, or your kettle or whatever, on it.

36. Oh yes you would have thought of it -
if your car had been stuck in the loneliest French mountains, literally in the middle of nowhere - and that grill/grate/whatever thingy you had with you for cooking was the only thing you could put under the wheel. I've been using it ever since :)

Umbrella

sunglasses

cell phone charger

several tins of caffeinated mints in the glove box

North American road atlas

portable 12v DC air compressor

tool kit with screwdrivers, ratchet, sockets and crescent wrench

jumper cables

hydraulic jack rated @ 5000 lbs (because the near-useless jack that comes with the car just doesn't do it if you have to change a tire on the shoulder of an indifferently maintained road at 3 am in freezing fucking cold)

full-size spare tire (I made a point of getting a spare wheel and having a tire put on - the undersized rubber doughnut is a joke, IMO)

Ice scraper
2 spare stocking hats (1 acrylic, 1 fleece)
large beach towel (potential blanket use--as well as just helping me in my kayaking during the season)
Tool box (not elaborate, but fairly complete)
Work boots (will do for hiking in a pinch)
Spare light weight jacket (extra roomy for layering purposes)
Kayak paddle (no real use for it this time of year--but no other good place to put it!)
A couple of regulation tournament discs (frisbees 175 grams)

I just need to hook myself up with some candles for heat in an emergency, food, well let's just say I'd have a couple of days before that became a serious concern!

30. Not much in either car
In the trunk there's an emergency kit, a blanket and tire chains. Inside the car, we usually keep some cds, an umbrella, some sunglasses, some maps and an ice scraper. In the glove compartment goes the tire pressure guage, the car handbook, a disposable camera, and the insurance and registration papers. I'm very obsessive about keeping my cars clean inside, so I always cart out whatever doesn't belong in the car when I get home, and I've taught my husband to do the same. :)
