Nirvana....
Edited on Sat Jan-14-06 02:23 AM by aquaman
I have not listened to this band in years. I of course have all their cd's. Saw them live at the beginning in the late 1980's. At that time they were a great rock n roll band. Before you know it, they became the second coming of christ. I still liked them after their popularity burst, but not as much as I did at the beginning. However, listening to their cd's tonight reminds me of the great music that this band put out. No, they are not the best band in the world, but they were good. Punk? No!! Rock n Roll? Yes!!! oh, by the way, your mama.

1. Saw them at Stache's in Columbus, OH in 1990
A legendary dive that's had some incredible acts come through over the years; they blew away the crowd of believers and curious (which I was at the time)that night....

It is so good to see you out this late at night.....hope you are well. I am going to your old stomping grounds, Athens GA, to see The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in February at the 40 Watt. By the way, The Constantines are going on tour in Canada in the next month. That new cd is amazing!!

4. no way!
Hey bro, good to see you again, too:)

You gotta give a report about how the 40 Watt is looking these days; it seems like another lifetime since I was onstage there..

Did you hear about Bryan Harvey (House Of Freaks) and his family getting murdered in Richmond on New Year's Day? I still sick about it..

As far as the news story goes. I did not realize who it was until you posted about it a while back. My wife and I were talking about it today. Insane.

6. Bryan was an incredibly nice guy
When I lived in Athens I got to know him a bit when House Of Freaks came through and played; we bonded immediately because he was a lefty plasyer like me, and got drunk a few times of the years and talked guitars. You would have liked him..

Tragic situation. Athens is such a great town. God, the bands that I have seen there. The food is good too.

7. I saw them in 1989....
At the masquerade in Atlanta, I swear there were only about 30 people at the show. Met the band afterwards. It was 100 degrees in that place and Kurt had on a flannel shirt.

24. In the manner....
of the groundbreaking rock n roll for the time period. They became huge, a popular band that was everywhere, but good. That is not common, at least in my musical collection. They became so popular that I almost wanted to dislike them, but I of course could not. I read a story once that Kurt was living in his car when Nevermind came out and the cd started selling a billion copies. His first check was for 250,000, he never recovered.

26. "Of the groundbreaking rock n roll for the time period"
I agree wholeheartedly! :) And following time periods too, to my recollection.

In fact, they may be the most recent band to have achieved such acceptance and success based solely on their music, to date.

Honestly, I can't think of a group that has caused such a stir since them.

22. Rocket From The Tombs
If they had stayed together (and in Peter Laughner's case, stayed alive), they would have been America's greatest punk band; true originals.

But having The Dead Boys and Pere Ubu rise from their ashes almost makes up for it; I just wish Peter had recordeed a proper album w/ his solo stuff before he died...

I recently bought "Nevermind" to listen to on my disc player while I'm at the gym. I'm sure the other gym patrons enjoy watching me do the headbob to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" while they're trying to exercise ;-).

that band changed my life...I still listen to them.

Nearly every memory I have of my teenage years has a Nirvana soundtrack.

28. They did impress me
Edited on Sat Jan-14-06 10:26 AM by RetroLounge
Growing up listening to 60's metal, etc. I did not think they were not "original" by any means. But very good and perfect for their time. I think the hype killed them.

I had never heard of them and a friend gave me Bleach and took me to see them in early 1990 at Cabaret Metro in Chicago on a Sunday night. Maybe about 30 people, $2 cover to get in. I stood at the stage in front of Kurt and was fucking blown away. The songs from Nevermind were not out yet and they were playing them live and still forming them, it seems now. They played as if they were in front of 1000's of people and I still think it is one of the best shows I've ever seen.

I saw them again a year or so later at the same venue on the Nevermind tour. It was sold out and they still put on the same amazing show. I even jumped up on stage (I was 30 at the time!) and ran behind Kurt and then dove off the stage and got passed around the crowd. It was pretty cool...

Has anyone seen Last Days and is it worth it?

29. "Last Days" SUCKED SHIT.
Maybe the worst movie I ever saw.

I was a fan of Nirvana too, and this film's portrayal of Cobain makes it impossible to remember what one may have seen in him. The guy playing Cobain has zero charisma, unlike Kurt, zero talent, unlike Kurt, and is unpleasant to watch for two hours, as he stumbles around, mumbles, scratches at himself, and does NOTHING endearing at all. We don't even get to see him shoot up, so the viewer is left wondering, why is this idiot acting like this, and why the fuck should we care?

Gus Van Sant is capable of much better. Literally nothing happened in this movie. I saw it in the theatre, and the whole time, I was sighing impatiently, waiting for SOMEBODY to slap the dude playing "Blake" (they didn't call him Kurt in the film) upside the head and yell "What the fuck is the MATTER with you?!"

By all accounts, Cobain in real life was intelligent, articulate, and blessed with a mocking sense of humor. There's none of that in "Last Days," not even a ghlimmer of the musical abilities that made him a star.

Oh, and the whole film moves slower than molasses. Alomst the entire thing is told through single-camera static or slow traccking shots that last five minutes or longer.

Avoid this piece of shit at all costs.

31. I took my oldest daughter to see them
She was around 16 at the time. She thanks me to this day.

one of my favorite lines of all their songs-- "teenage angst has paid off well, now I'm bored and old"---

I seem to remember the word "angst" becoming popular after that.
I loved them. Like you say, not the greatest band in the world,(who is, anyway?) but man oh man they rocked.

32. I thought they were good, but not
the second coming like they were publicized as being. Really, I think that KC thought the same too. They were just a good band. I really like what the drummer has gone on to do with the Foo Fighters though. I can't remember his name now for some reason. Ugh!
