whale a year for its use.

Can't remember the name of the tribe.

Also, don't Eskimos eat whale meat?

I hope it tastes like chicken...

9. That's cool.
They don't abuse the species or the environment. Like the Native American and the Buffalo were.

I wish life were still that simple and meaningful.

31. Thanks, XemaSab. Learn something new every day -- at my age,
just trying to remember something OLD is helpful, too.

The Portland Oregonian had front page photos of the tribe members going after a whale.

Appreciate your post.

In peace,

13. I'm not mad at you or my computer
but I wandered out of the lounge today and I shouldn't have. People down here joke about GD, but LBN has it's moments too. We've had three whaling-related threads up there in the past week and two of them were locked.

The smilie was just a general expression of frustration over that situation and I suppose only would make sense in context. Sorry about that.

18. OK. You're excused. I got out of the third Alito thread yesterday,
and never wanted to be seen or heard from again.

Locked whaling threads??? Boy, I can't think of a context yet. Maybe I'll SEARCH.

What did they get to talking about, whale reproduction, size of a male whale's privates, baline used for corsets, WHAT?

On another subject, I need the rest of the slightly raunchy lyrics to Popeye the Sailor Man:

Here's what I remember:

I'm Popeye, the Sailor Man
I live in a garbage can
I never go swimmin' with bowlegged women
I'm Popeye, the Sailor Man

Have a good night, LeftyMom... sleep well until tomorrow!

In peace,

Radio_Lady

10. Right. And a fluke refers to the whale's tail.
http://www.blueoceansociety.org/kids.htm

Activity 1: Make your own whale!

We can tell humpback whales apart by the patterns on the underside of their tail. Humpback tails are like our fingerprints - they're different for every whale. Each whale had a pattern on it's tail which is all white, all black, or somewhere in between. Here are some examples:

"Marble" "Seal" "Trident" "Satula" "Fan"

(Click on each picture above to see a bigger one).

Scientists give each whale a name to make it easier to remember them. The name usually describes a marking on the whale's tail, or fluke. "Marble" was named because of a round circle on his tail that looks like a marble. "Fan" was named because of a fan-shaped mark on its tail.

That looks like a flounder to me. (Is a fluke a flounder?) It has both eyes on one side of its head.

4. I may go on a Whale Watching tour tomorrow. Thanks for the inspiration.
Its been 20 years since I last went out to photoshoot the California Greys.
Last time was when my oldest was three and was trying to climb over the side of the boat. Very stressful!

21. Once a naughty girl, always a naughty girl. My mother, may she rest
in peace, was so worried about me when I was growing up. Little did she know that I was one of the first co-eds at the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida, to request and receive birth control "equipment" at the Health Center when I demanded it.

"Oh, it's a blithering, thithering, shivering, slivering life I lead on the briny sea!"

(HAVE YOU SEEN ME IN MY FIRST JOB IN MIAMI, FLORIDA? THEY HIRED ME TO PLAY THE FIRST MATE TO THE SKIPPER -- POPEYE PLAYHOUSE KID'S SHOW, CIRCA 1957. LITTLE DID THEY KNOW I GOT SEASICK IN CARS, BUSSES, AND ANY KIND OF BOAT YOU CAN IMAGINE. HOW IRONIC!)

22. Woohoo, a real progressive, liberal, liberated woman!
And I did see that pic of you on that show. That's funny, being seasick/carsick/bus sick! That picture kind of reminds of me a show that was on in Oregon when I was growing up: Captain Shipwreck. I got to be on the show when I was 11, and, um, uh, spilled the beans that my mother was pregnant with my baby sis! No one outside the immediate family had been told, and two of my aunties happened to have the show on that day, because they knew I was going to be on. My mom just freaked, and my aunties were like, WTF???? I sure know how to do it up royal!

24. You bet!
Oh, that's such a funny story, SeattleGirl! You probably don't remember Art Linkletter, still alive in his 90s, who used to do a show called "Kids Say the Darndest Things." There are old kinescopes/films of the show that Larry King showed when Art was his guest. They have some DOOZIES... yours would have qualified, I'm sure!

25. Here's some more info on Gordon Bussey, of Eugene, OR who was
"Captain Shipwreck" on KVAL, Channel 13. "Captain Shipwreck" was the showcase for the unbeatable Popeye cartoon package -- so, in his striped shirt and sailor hat, this tar sailed the Oregon seas into immortality.
