Houseplant folks:
Just inherited a MAMMOTH jade plant (tree) from our neighbor who is moving to China next month.

From what he tells us it is almost 15 years old and has been with him since it was a propagated sprout from another jade plant.

Very cool plant. Wish I could post an image.

That is all.

:)

1. did he mention whether it has flowered for him?
I don't know where you are but they can flower under the right conditions.
I've seen some spectacular ones before so I can picture your new plant - congratulations!

He must have shared his tips for caring for it with you... Good Luck! :hi:

2. Those things are amazing...
I have one in my front yard that started from a cutting from a friend's plant. We just stick it in the ground and let't do its thing. Ten years later the thing is HUGE and ready to take over the driveway! It's been flowering for the past few months -- kinda nice. The dozens of house finches that visit my feeder each day hang out in it while waiting to que for a nosh -- kinda tells you how big it is. :)

My neighbor's Grandmother created a jade hedge for their property line that it around 30 feet long. It took awhile to mature, but now it is going gangbusters -- it's blooming too.

Want are you going to name him?

3. House plant in Rochester
Your winters are too cold for it to grow outside. Some of the other posters who talk about it growing outside are from California.
Enjoy your plant!

under the right conditions. I went to look for info about what the right conditions are and evidently daylength is most important... the shortening daylength of natural light.

from

"...Jade plants are best grown in very bright sunlight with low humidity, however if the plant is accustomed to dimmer light, you must move it into the sun in stages. Jades will sunburn if they are not used to the full sun. Jades are best grown between 55F at night and 75-80F during the day, however they will tolerate temperatures down to 40F. They should be repotted every two to three years. Use a well drained commercial potting soil mixed equally with sharp builder sand, and a scoop of bone meal added. The optimum soil ph is 6.5.
Jade plants have an active and a dormant growing cycle. Watering and feeding are determined by the cycle. During the spring and summer months keep the soil slightly moist . Water liberally, approximately once per week but allow for slight drying between watering. Remove any excess water from pot saucer. Fertilize with a 10-20-10 or 5-10-5 ratio soluble plant food every two weeks. African violet food works very well for most succulents. Keep plant dry during the winter months as plant has a slight dormancy. Do not fertilize from November through March. Typically, all healthy Jades will bloom, usually around Christmas, in the northern hemisphere. Blooming is triggered by the natural shortening of the days. If your plant is in a room which usually has lights turned on at night, it will more than likely fail to bloom for you. Try to find a suitable, naturally lighted place for the Jade sometime in early October, along with your Christmas cactus. Your plant will do the rest for you! "

4. Houseplant lover, here!
Your new jade plant sounds cool. We've got one, too. I didn't know they could grow tree size. Aren't they in the succulent family? In any case, Enjoy!
