Ok, so what was the best album of the 1970's
We'll start a thread and take the top 10 albums mentioned and then from there we'll create a poll and vote for the #1 album of the 70s.

My list of the top #5 (in my humble opinion and yes, in order)

  1. Led Zeppelin "Physical Graffiti"
  2. Pink Floyd's "The Wall"
  3. Queen's "Night at the Opera"
  4. Yes "The Yes Album"
  5. Led ZEppelin "IV" (actually it has no name, it was the 4th album)
  6. Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon"

(ok I had to do 6 albums because both Floyd albums were amazing. I could probably do 10 and add in Ziggy Stardust, maybe a few King Crimson albums and some punk albums of the late 70s but we'll stick with 6 from me)

2. Very interesting and eclectic list.
I can't really fault it at all.

I'll have to think about what I'ad have on my list, but I know that your 1 and 5 would be there, and most likely your number 2. The Sex Pistols and Ramones would probably be in my top 20, maybe even top 10, but I'm not sure I'd put them in the top 5.

6. I don't loathe them that much, but they wouldn't be on my list
:)

As to the Europe '72 choice, I'm just not a fan of any of the official releases by the Dead (until they started releaseing the Dick's Picks series, which were complete unadulterated shows for the most part).

I've been listening to Neil Young's Harvest all week, though...I think that's gotta be in my '70s top five.

5. I have to put PG first only because I'm so sick of "Rock & Roll"
That damn Cadillac commericial has bumped the IV album down to actually my 4th favorite LZ album and 2nd for the 70s (My favorite LZ is LZII which came out in 69 and of course LZI which came out in 68)

As far as the album is concerned, though, "When the Levee Breaks" cancels out any Cadillac associations for me. Probably my all-time favorite Led Zep song. (Although LZ II is my favorite album, too :D)

58. I actually hate most of Led Zep IV
Rock and Roll, Black Dog, Stairway...all of those pretty much blow and seem like throwaway songs.

Four Sticks is the highlight on that one, as well as Levee...

Led Zep III was IMHO a much better album...

my daughter heading into her room with a handful of my cd's. She had a couple of Elton John's. A few minutes later, I handed her Tumbleweed Connection and told her "the others are good, this is the best".
I haven't checked back with her yet for her opinion.

13. My list --
Edited on Thu Jan-12-06 09:42 AM by Spider Jerusalem
1. David Bowie - "Low" (there's no question in my mind that this is the greatest album of the decade, not only as a work in itself but for its influence, which transcended the narrow confines of genre.)

And the rest of my list is unranked.

Sex Pistols - "Never Mind the Bollocks..."

Brian Eno - "Another Green World"

Clash - "London Calling"

Can - "Ege Bamyasi"

Miles Davis - "Bitches Brew"

Velvet Underground - "Loaded"

Television - "Marquee Moon"

Iggy Pop - "Lust For Life"

The Stooges - "Raw Power"

Lou Reed - "Transformer"

Bob Dylan - "Blood on the Tracks"

Kraftwerk - "Trans-Europe Express"

Tom Waits - "Small Change"

I've probably forgotten a few...but, then, I was only 2 years old when the '70's ended.

If it had been released in '70, I would put it up there with "Heavy Weather". Without question it is one of the greatest percussion albums of all time.

14. I noticed you didn't list London Calling by the CLash so I googled
and discovered that even though it was released in December 1979 it was considered, by Rolling Stone magazine "the best album of the 80's" . even though it was technically made in the last month of 70's it's considered an 80's album. I assumed it was released earlier then that and couldn't believe nobody listed it so far in this thread.

16. I think it would have made top 15
I love punk but I was a child of classic rock so there would have been some Tull, Crimson, Yes and other bands (including maybe 1-2 more Zep albums because I'm so fricking predictable when it comes to anything LZ).

But for the best punk album without a doubt it would be the Sex Pistols "Never Mind" album but "London Calling" would be #2. BTW, I own "London Calling" on vinyl but I'm trying to find a copy of the Sex Pistol's album on vinyl

20. Ok, I have a beef w/ your list
You have two Pink Floyd albums, but neither one of them is "Wish You Were Here" (which is the best Pink Floyd Album bar none, and since it came out in the 70s, it trumps both "Dark Side of the Moon" and "The Wall").

And while "The Yes Album" is quite good, it definitely gets beat by "Close to the Edge" and possibly beat by "Going for the One"

I know that when bands put out a lot of really good music it's easy to forget. :silly:

(For the record, I think "The Wall" is one of PF's worst albums.)

24. I have to admit I picked the "The Yes Album" because it's my favorite
but you're right, I would probably say "Close to the Edge" was better overall. But my heart is quite sentimental with the songs 'All Good People' and 'Starship Trooper' (seeing ST live in concert was probably one of the best musical experiences ever - they closed their 90215 with ST and had an amazing light show with it)

and I do love "Starship Trooper", but I also love "Awaken" from "Going for the One"

I understand that they have announced that this tour will be their last. They're really quite a good show, it's too bad they can't go on forever. Few bands can.

I just love Yes - #3 on my list of all time favorite bands.

I had a haunting dream the day before my father died that had the first part of "All Good People" in it. The song is very memorable to me and I love the live versions because you can hear "All we are saying is give Peace a chance" in the end of it

30. bookends: The Stooges "Funhouse" (1970) & PiL's "Metal Box" (1979)
Perfect bookends for the decade that was the 1970s

Funhouse laid the blueprint for what punk rock would become. One of the top five of all time, IMHO.

Metal Box (aka "Second Edition" in the US) was one of the first post-punk records, combining punk's aggression with the deep groove of dub reggae and the krautrock of Can and Neu!, too.

There's several more worth mentioning but hey I got stuff to do.

In honor of the most mythical of bands with heydays in the 70's, Spinal Tap. :-)

1. "One More From The Road" - Lynyrd Skynyrd (this list proves that 70's live albums were the best of that decade)
2. "Live At The Fillmore East" - The Allman Brothers Band
3. "Blood On The Tracks" - Bob Dylan
4. "One Size Fits All" - Frank Zappa and the Mothers
5. "The Dark Side of the Moon" - Pink Floyd
6. "Live Bullet" - Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band
7. "Moondance" - Van Morrison
8. "Street Survivors" - Lynyrd Skynyrd
9. "Living In The Past" - Jethro Tull
10. "Houses of the Holy" - Led Zeppelin
11. "Tonight's The Night" - Neil Young

Oh hell, then there are albums by The Band, Lou Reed, ZZ Top, CCR, John Lennon, Rush, Stevie Wonder, The Clash, and dozens more...

I think 'Obscured' is very underrated and always worthy of praise... but the masterpiece is always going to be DSOTM.

I also think 'Animals' is highly underrated too. It isn't easy coming after DSOTM and 'Wish You Were Here'. :P

To me, there is no such thing as a bad Floyd album; I even love the post-Waters albums. Roger is great, but I loves me some David Gilmour!

(and Gilmour is the reason 'Obscured' is a gem)

67. This isn't even close, "Heavy Weather" by Weather Report.
The line-up on this album may be the gretaest line-up of musicians ever to play on any album.

It is not only the best album of the 70's, it is one of the best albums ever IMO.
