I grew up listening to him in the 60s. I wanted to see him live before he got too old. Did I say too old? Silly me. He just keeps rockin'.
He opened with 10 brand new songs. "Greendale" won't be released until August. He's done something different. Surprised? He created characters and wrote his songs around them; the songs link them in a coherent story with plenty of human social and political commentary. The characters were on stage with him, acting out the story while he sang it. I believe he is making a DVD.
Heres a lyric tidbit from "Sun Green:"
Sun Green leaned into that megaphone, said,
"Truth is all I seek."
Security brought in some blow torches
News cameras recorded her speech,
"When the city is plunged into darkness
by an unpredicted rolling blackout
The White House always blames the governor
Saying the solution is to vote him out."
On top of that great bronze eagle
Sun's voice was loud and clear. She said,
"Power Co's working with the White House
to paralyze our state with fear."And there's more.
After a short break he came out and rocked the audience with a long selection of their favorites. My 25 year old son commented that he'd never attended a performance where the audience were all on their feet singing along, word for word. I think he was referring to "out of the blue" and "keep on rockin' in the free world." I told him to wait until Sunday night, when we're seeing Dylan.
Did I say old? Silly me. Other than the 5 minute break between "Greendale" and the rest, the man was on stage for 2 1/2 hours and never quit. There was often never even a pause or a breath between songs.
