I almost wish i had had it earlier. The 10 month old i did not really want. I figured i was almost free. What makes it worse i was colluded against! Partner #1 bore our 9yr old daughter. Basicly it only works while the kid is nursing exclusively and very frequently. Once the kid sleeps through the night or starts eating solids ovulation usually isn't far behind but I know of women who've had lactational ammenhorea (I probably spelled that wrong) for over two years- quite a few of them were tandem nursing, though.

It's important to keep monitoring basal temperature and watching for signs of resumed fertility while using LAM as birth control. The best book on the subject (although it has some wierd religious elements I don't agree with) is Shiela Kippley's Breastfeeding and Natural Child Spacing.
