Poll question: Favorite Southern Progressive Town
Being that there are so many red states in the south, they tend to have these enclaves that foster southern zeal for blue state values. It's a good thing.

5. I lived in one, so I voted for it
But, really, Boone, NC, and Asheville, NC would be hard to beat.

14. You have got that right.
Wanna know something funny? I live in the South, and stick up for it quite a bit. But in all honesty, i won't hardly step foot in any other Southern state but N.C., and theres room for improvement here(mostly industrial piedmont) .

6. New Orleans: now and forever!
The city as a whole is perhaps more DLC-like than truly progressive, however entire neighborhoods including the lower Quarter, Faubourg Marigny, Bywater, Faubourg St. John and Carrollton (near Tulane and Loyola) are progressive and, taken all together, would constitute a decent-sized town all by themselves.

One can also easily imagine a righteous anger rising in hitherto politically apathetic areas such as New Orleans East and the iconic Lower Ninth Ward as well.

7. Athens, GA! I live here and love it!
I love NOLA too. However, NOLA doesn't really belong in this poll. NOLA is a totally unique place that has no equal!

12. Asheville, NC
The South has a lot of great progressive communities. Its a shame people stereotype the whole region.

15. Asheville, NC, no question......
I like Athens too, but Asheville is like another planet within the south. I go as much as possible.

17. Charlottesville!!!
Deep in the heart of the old commonwealth, bright blue spot in an otherwise purple state. Trust me on the purple part. If only the people who vote repub around here knew what they are really doing.

Voted #1 city in the country to live in last year :)

I love love love it here.

18. C'ville is wonderful...
I've been there many times and could happily live there:)

I would suggest Key West for this list, but although it's way far south,it's not really "The South"
