Need suggestions for window treatments please!
Edited on Mon Jan-02-06 07:54 PM by purr
My addition is getting close to done and I'm sick of people stopping in front of ny house and looking in. Creeps me out. So heres a pic of my front window approx 72" wide 56" long double window.

floors not completely done yet.

What should I put on my windows that will give me good privacy?

Thanks :)

1. Some people use butcher paper for a temporary fix.

A lot of stores will do that when they're teasing for a grand opening. Butcher paper is available in very wide sizes, I think.

This gives you lots of time to plan which window treatment you want, too, instead of hurrying out and buying whatever.

edit: Congrats on the new addition!

2. Blinds?
Yeah, I have no decorating sense, so it's probably best to ignore me.

5. Aluminum foil
Leftover wrapping paper (bonus points if it's Scooby Doo or something?)

A friend's family bought a new mcmansion in the burbs but had sheets nailed up in the windows for years after they moved in. I'm not quite that bad, but mainly because it seemed like a waste of really cool old Star Wars sheets. ;)

6. I have an artist friend who has good taste
matter of fact, she lived in france, wears top line designer clothes, owns her own boutique, and a bunch of other stuff, too.
Anyway, she did her entire tiny house in the simplest thing. She has beautifully ornate, wrought iron rods across the top with off-white fabric hanging straight down. No 'curtains'. The rooms are in complete privacy day or nite but during the day... any and all the light is allowed in. The light just shines right through it. It's really nice.

The loops of the fabric that go over the rods are some kind of Greek key cut. I hope you know what i mean. I don't know how to describe it.
Maybe like this: |---|__|---|__|---|__|---|__|---|__|---|__|---|__|---|

7. I think you're describing tab tops.
But hey, I'm in the same boat. My drapes are hideous but I keep them because I don't know what else to do -- and whatever it is needs to accommodate Princess Lucy Peanut Butter climbing up to sit on on the window sills.

9. wooden blinds
they'd go nice with your floor. You can tip them so some light comes in but people below the level of your window can't see in.

8. I vote for the mini blinds
with pin holes. When closed they still allow in the light.

11. What goes in the room?
The simple thing - that looks good with everything - is to go get white or natural muslin (at the fabric store; it starts at 89 cents a yard) and drape it over plain rods on hooks above the windows. It's very minimalist and easy.

Bamboo shades would look good with the floors and give some privacy. If you don't know what to do and are willing to wait a bit and study, try the paper blinds from Lowe's. They're supposed to be temporary, but they will last a good year or so and look classic.

If it were my room, I'd probably put up a box valence, some light cotton curtains and a matchstick blind during the summer and take down the cotton curtains for heavier, velvet drapes in the winter.

12. Heres a quick fix
My husband and I built a cabin and I was looking for something to give me privacy and control heat loss. I don't know if that is something you need but it would work anyway. I bought a quilt I liked and made sure one side of it was plain colored. A twin sized one would work for your window. I created a pocket on the top and put a cheap pole through it. The pole was securely fastened above the window. At a discount store I purchased wooden rings with spring clips on them and every 16 to 20 inches on each side of the curtain I attached the rings. Above the window I put a railroad spike (ha! that would only work in our cabin I know) but you could use a sturdy screw in hook. When you want the "curtain" open you gather the rings from the bottom up and place them all over the hook. This makes the quilt form a valance which looks really good and swags slightly in the center.

here is a picture of mine down

I used the shams that came with it to cover old pillows and use as toss pillows.

hope this helps!
