3. A thermonuclear weapon.
It didn't detonate. Therefore Billy Joe had to jump off the bridge to kill himself. He had planned to take the whole state of Mississippi with him.

6. I used to play that song in an open Gm tuning at a lot of clubs.
It was a very esoteric version.

People used to come up to me and say "You know, I always hated that song." I took that a complement.

Later, whenever I played it, I'd announce it that way, and say, "People always tell me that they always hated this song."

8. Bobbie Lee's old rag doll
That nice young preacher Brother Taylor stopped by today
Said he'd be pleased to have dinner on Sunday — oh, by the way
He said he saw a girl that looked a lot like you up on Choctaw Ridge
And she and Billy Joe was throwing somethin' off the Tallahatchie Bridge

In the movie, Bobbie Lee and Billy Joe were fighting over the doll and it fell into the river.

And y'all gotta learn how to spell Suthuhn. :7

9. I can't believe you suckered me into this, but Billy Jo McAllister
Jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge, so he threw himself off. Ok, what's the pay-off? Some really bad pun? You think that's punny?
