Denali!
(otherwise known as Mt. McKinley), for my Lounge friends. This was shot across Knik Arm from Anchorage, using my new 70-300 lens at 260 mm. The land on the bluff is one of the "nowheres" of "bridges to nowhere" fame.

8. Awww! It's a wee one!
I was asking because size can be deceptive on distant peaks.

Thanks for the photos!

9. It's really deceptive on these photos
because of the telephoto lens. Denali and Foraker are probably 200 miles from here and don't look anywhere near this large to the naked eye. I'm in love with my lens.

6. I took these about 1:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon...
A little late for sunrise, and a little early for sunset, but the sun is still very low on the southern horizon all day this time of year.

7. Thank you...
Yesterday was one of the very, very few sunny days we've had since I got my new camera in early December, which has been really frustrating for me. I finally decided I was going to take pictures yesterday no matter what, so I was really glad it turned out to be such a nice day.

19. I am very surprised at the amount of light you got. I thought it was
totally dark all day there this time of year.

20. Not here in Anchorage, which is in the southcentral part
of the state. Right now we have about 5-1/2 hours of daylight a day. My fellow Alaskan, NorthOfDenali, who apparently lives in Fairbanks, doesn't get that much. Up on the North Slope -- Barrow, Prudhoe Bay -- it's dark for 2-1/2 months out of the year. Alaska is really huge and we have a lot of different environmental conditions from one part of the state to another.

a little further than I care to walk. I'll let the lens do it for me.

16. I drove it once,
I thought it was at least 180 miles. Took me almost the whole day to do the round trip. Unfortunately for me, I left there in 2000. I would still love to move back someday..

17. Great shots, Blue!!!
Did you see "little" Foraker in the ADN yesterday? Here in Fairbanks, Foraker is the "little bump" next to Denali....

On a motorcycle run last summer, the Great One (between Wasilla and Healy) was "out" the entire time. My last "sighting" was just before our current temperature inversion set in.

Evasive mountain!

18. I did see that picture...

In fact, my husband and I were driving on the Seward Highway, I believe, here in town when it popped out bathed in all that golden glow. It looked so beautiful and unreal (as it was completely overcast here in town) I exclaimed, "Oh, WOW!" and Jim stomped on the brakes, going "What? WHAT?" -- so the little mountain nearly caused a collision. I have to learn to keep my outbursts to myself.

21. The Seward Highway does that to one...........
whether it's a mountain or just the water.

Believe it or not, last summer I saw a pod of beluga AT BELUGA POINT!!!!!

It'll never happen again! We were on the bike, and I thought we were going to join them....... motorcycle, camping gear and all.

28. No, I don't yet, but I'm dying for a good, clear cold night
so I can go out somewhere in the clear and attempt some shots. I read an article in the paper a couple of days ago that said the magnetic pole and the northern lights are migrating over toward Russia and may not be visible here after 50 years or so except on rare occasions, so I'd better get out there and preserve some for posterity.

Don't know what it is but the subject of Denali keeps popping up around me lately. I guess just because since last year I've decided I want to get there someday and I'm just noticing it more.

You really should try to get up here for a visit someday. You won't be sorry. I've lived a lot of different places in my life, but I landed here 30 years ago, and this is where I want to stay.
