Poll question: are you of the tough love school.??
or the " i am here for you no matter what"...school of thought?
i was just reading responses to someones thread (on another board)...where the person acknowledges having a substance problem...and hurting many people in the process...but says very little of what he/she is doing to get better or make amends...
and i realized that my gut instinct is to say... "stop whining...grow up...do something about it...join a program...apologize to the people you have hurt...then maybe you will be able to fix your life etc"
whereas there are clearly people who think just admission of problem is deserving of forgiveness etc...
I tend to forgive because there are plenty of times when I need to be forgiven. I tend to be compassionate because there are times when I need that too. I am totally the opposite of tough love.

It depends on how you view the problem. I wouldn't tell a rape victim to just get over it and stop bitching, and I wouldn't take much time out of my day for someone seeking sympathy for his hangnail.
