Yes! A morning show talking about etiquette of Thank You Notes!
Edited on Wed Dec-28-05 09:27 AM by Rabrrrrrr
I hope America becomes at least slightly more mannered because of this segment.

I especially love that the woman on the show is saying that email is not the way to do it, and that pre-made thank you notes with blank lines is not appropriate, either. Handwrite it, mention the gift, don't spell the gift giver's name wrong, and mention what you will do with the gift or how it is otherwise a great gift. Good advice!

YAY!!

1. Do we have to send thank you notes for Christmas gifts??
We spent the holiday at my sisters and they bought everything for the 3 days, food, drinks etc........should I send one to thank them for all the work they did?? I did give them a gift, it was a roll of stamps for $39.00. They didn't really give us a gift per say, but said that with all the cooking of the meals, and all the snacks, drinks etc. that that was their gift to us...... think I should send them one??

5. It's always good to send a thank you when you stay with someone
and let them know how much you appreciate their hospitality.

I always figure that a thank you sent at the wrong time (assuming there even is such a thing, which there probably isn't) is still better than a thank you not sent at the right time.

You can never go wrong being polite and recognizing what people do for you.

Who makes up these stupid rules?

E-mail is better than making people decipher my mediocre penmanship.

4. It might save you time if you turned those into checkboxes,
then it only requires a small pen mark, instead of wasting all that time making a whole circle.

6. That's sooooo last year's Thank You Notes...
Besides, circles tested as "more thankful" in the focus group.

9. Pre-made thank you notes with blank lines...
are very appropriate when it's a three-year-old writing the notes. He can print the gift giver's name, what the present is, and sign his own name. Asking him to write the entire note would mean that the thank you notes would take nearly until next Christmas.

10. What if you hate the gift?
It seems insincere then to thank them for something you will never wear or use and plan on getting rid of as soon as humanly possible.

go buy the latest game on the Xbox that I really wanted.

12. You are thanking them for thinking of you.
And for caring enough to give you a gift.

"Thank you for the glow-in-the-dark Santa statue with motion-activated carol-singing. It is certainly unique and the most unusual gift I have ever received! I appreciate your thinking of me. Happy New Year to you!"

You don't actually have to indicate that you like the gift or will be keeping it.

22. I know; I was being a smart-ass
My grandmother is known for sending bad gifts. This year is was a shirt, a plain white t-shirt with denim appliques. Horrible. I said to my Mom (who got one too) that we do not have big enough hair to wear them. Not to mention it was three times too big for me.

15. You do it because it's polite, not because you like the gift
Edited on Wed Dec-28-05 02:54 PM by Rabrrrrrr
You are acknowledging their thoughtfulness in giving you something. Even if you don't like it, the giver deserves some acknowledgment. DOn't lie in the card, saying "I'm gonna wear it always!" if your intent is to toss it to GoodWill as soon as possible, but saying "thank you" is the polite thing to do.

And if you lie about liking it, you might get something similar next time, so be careful. :-)

18. Wouldn't that be nice?
If people would actually let you know ahead of time, by the rsvp date, whether they're coming, instead of just holding out until the day of the shindig and then, if nothing better has appeared on their horizon, showing up unannounced?

Yeah, I fucking love that.

even before the event began, and then tell you that they don't like a particular food item as you set it before them.

24. My friend adds a line below the rsvp part on invitations
If you plan on eating at the party, please call and rsvp. If you do not, we will assume that you cannot come, or will eat before you arrive:)

She always gets rsvp-s, and they usually laugh when they call her:) For good friends, she will say.. and if you are a no-show, we will send you a bill :)

27. That's a good idea! Though it's sad that it has to be done.
People should just know to respond without the issuance of the penalty for non-response - it's simply the courteous and proper thing to do.

Sigh.

But there are times I have felt like writing what your friend writes.

26. Nothing wrong with those -
it's the ones that are printed with a thank you message with blank lines in which you write what the gift was, so it looks something like this:

Dear ______

Thank you for the wonderful gift of ________________.

Sincerely,

___________

31. I started a thread about how hot she is, but how incredibly dumb she is
because now that i have extra cable, I've been watching FOOD channel a lot this last week, and so have been exposed to her a lot. I'd seen her occasionally before, and she didn't really bother me, but now that I'm seeing her a lot more she's grating on my nerves with her stupidity.

Not sure why that was worthy of a thread DELETION, though. Other than that someone during the night must have gotten nasty in it.
