May They Rest In Peace: those who passed in 2005
Edited on Mon Dec-26-05 09:48 PM by ih8thegop
The purpose of this thread is to remember all of those - family members, friends, pets, or more well-known people - who passed away in 2005.

No one close to me has died this year, luckily. However, if you have lost someone close to you, please accept my heartfelt condolences. :hug:

Let’s remember our beloved DUers who passed way too soon:

Scott Lowery (Khephra), King of LBN
Jeff Matson (nostamj), master compiler of cartoons for DU
Andy Stephenson, whose love for Democracy and work for voting reform inspires me

A number of political titans also left us:

Bob Matsui
Shirley Chisholm, Congress's first black woman
Gaylord Nelson, founder of Earth Day
William Proxmire
Eugene McCarthy

And then there are those who stood up for what’s right:

Pope John Paul II
Rosa Parks

...and those who made us laugh:

Johnny Carson
Richard Pryor

Not to mention:

Hunter S. Thompson
John Spencer
Saul Bellow

... and so many others whom I haven't mentioned.

Finally, let’s remember the victims of hurricanes, the tsunami, the London bombings, the Pakistan earthquake, the Iraq war (soldiers and civilians), and all other disasters.

A Catholic prayer for those who have passed:

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and may Eternal Light shine upon them.

May their souls, and all the souls of the faithful departed, by the Grace of God, Rest In Peace.

Amen.

BTW: in years past, people have listed 'Democracy,' 'the Constitution,' or the like as having died in that year. Though you could probably argue that they're dead, I believe they are either still alive or died long before 2005 began.

I would like to contribute a poem that I read some years ago in a Hallmark card:

Life is eternal;

And love is immortal;

And death is only a horizon;

And a horizon is nothing

Save the limit of our sight.

For all our lost ones this year.....

11. My dear, dear aunt died last night, 11:25 on Christmas night.
She was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer on December 1, and she's already gone. She's only 61 years old.
The world will miss her gentle soul. My family surely will.

Rest in peace, Aunt Brenda. I love you.

51. Mary Bell, who wrote "Whistle Down the Wind."
Her obituary is at this link:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/06/AR2005120601835.html

I heard that Sir John and his wife renewed their marriage vows when they were in their 90s! I guess they got married in haste during WWII or the like.

http://archives.seattletimes.nwsource.com/cgi-bin/texis.cgi/web/vortex/display?slug=margo23e&date=20051223&query=o%27callaghan

I knew Margo right after her stroke when she could barely move or even leave the house. It was so sad. So we were thrilled years later to hear of her equestrian accomplishments. A little over a week ago a drunk driver ended her life. :(

And I wish I had met Fenris' grandfather, who passed away in July. :(

Edited on Wed Dec-28-05 01:52 AM by Parrcrow
Author of the famous X article in 'Foreign Affairs' "The Sources of Soviet Conduct". Historian and diplomat, Kennan devised the containment strategy adopted as western policy during the Cold War.

Kennan, more than anyone else is responsible for the defeat of the Soviet Union without a major war that would have killed 10's of millions.
