Calling Female Du'ers, I need your assistance.
Ok, men too if ya want. I have one and a half days left to finish getting xmas gifts for my wife. I'm usually really good at it but this year I just can't think of what else to get! I've gotten a mp3 player and some cd's she wanted and am toying with the idea of getting her another watch. I need some more ideas though before time runs out! She's 32 and doesn't have any real hobbies or real passions that would make it easy.

I just want you women out there to start listing all sorts of gifts you wish you'd get for xmas and I'm sure I'll spot one that she'd want!

C'mon DU, throw out the ideas!

Thanks :)

2. Jewelry
Perfume - if she wears it. Those are female gifts men seldom buy.

You know what I just bought myself for Christmas? A clean car. I went to the car wash and paid for the works. My car is spotless inside and out. It cost $35 and was worth every penny. I would have loved to receive that as a gift. hint hint

3. Some ideas that may or may not work:
EIGHT GIFTS THAT DO NOT COST A CENT

1. THE GIFT OF LISTENING…
But you must really listen. No interrupting, no daydreaming, no planning your response. Just listening.

2. THE GIFT OF AFFECTION…
Be generous with appropriate hugs, kisses, pats on the back, and handholds. Let these small actions demonstrate the love you have for family and friends.

3. THE GIFT OF LAUGHTER…
Clip cartoons. Share articles and funny stories. Your gift will say, “I love to laugh with you.”

4. THE GIFT OF A WRITTEN NOTE…
It can be a simple “Thanks for the help” note or a full sonnet. A brief, handwritten note may be remembered for a lifetime, and may even change a life.

5. THE GIFT OF A COMPLIMENT…
A simple and sincere “You look great in red,” “You did a super job,” or “That was a wonderful meal” can make someone’s day.

6. THE GIFT OF A FAVOR…
Every day, go out of your way to do something kind.

7. THE GIFT OF SOLITUDE…
There are times when we want nothing better than to be left alone. Be sensitive to those times, and give the gift of solitude to others.

8. THE GIFT OF A CHEERFUL DISPOSITION…
The easiest way to feel good is to extend a kind word to someone. Really, it’s not that hard to say “Hello” or “Thank you.”

15. Don't they really speak to our heart's desire?
With a little creativity, you could write these out on paper, and wrap them up in individual boxes... like the empty valentine's day heart boxes, or one of those fancy foil boxes at the store.

Give more attention to the person, not the gift, and you'll win, every time.

(and thank ya, AA - I truly wish the same for you as well!)

DH is really good at this. He's not a professional writer, but even just a few words from him scrawled on a piece of paper make my heart sing. Of course, I save them all and they've been read and reread more times than you'd ever believe.

If you're not sure about the whole writing thing, another poster suggested getting your wife something she typically wouldn't buy for herself. I agree.

47. Listen to her for long enough to know the answer to your own question
Seriously. If I could have one thing from my husband, it would be an hour of his undivided attention.

How would one woman know what another one wanted? I had this same conversation with a salesperson in Tiffany's at the mall. I went in to look at sparkly things and found the men roaming around very funny - they were obviously hoping that any shiny gewgaw in a blue-green bag would please the woman they had put off shopping for until today. The salesperson told me she couldn't count the number of men who asked her, "I need a present for my mother/wife/sister, what would she like?"

48. Thanks for the shot, but it isn't accurate.
I listen to her just fine, which is how I know what cd's she wanted, and the mp3 player. But she has no real hobbies, no favorite makeup, doesn't much like jewlery, isn't really passionate about any one thing above another, and has gotten so many gifts from me that there really isn't much else that I can think of to be that 'can't wait till she opens it' type gift.

I listen to my wife and other wives have constantly told me how good of a gift giver I am and how they wish their husbands put that much effort into it. Fact is I always come through, but this year though I've gotten some stuff, I don't have that one gift that I'm realllllllly excited about for her. I care enough to want to get that really great gift, but am having trouble this year. That's why I called on DU for some stuff to see if anything stuck out. I did get the spa treatment for her today though, so that was something.

Sorry you felt the need to take my good intent and use it for good ole fashioned male bashing. But I'm not one that deserves it. :)

63. What bashing? There was no bashing. I was trying to HELP.
Why is it that whenever someone says such basic things as "women aren't all the same" and "listen to your wife", it's perceived as male-bashing? What bashing? You asked for an answer, I made an answer that was heartfelt and thought out and based on my experiences, and that's bashing? If my statement had come from Uncle Joe instead of Aunt Jen, would it have fallen differently on your ears? Please think about that. It's an honest question, and I have a really serious reason for asking it. My answer was intended as a one-guy-to-another bit of HELP, not a man-bashing.

Here's another secret, and I hope to hell you don't take this as a bashing, either. This is an absolute honest attempt to fill you in on some of the stuff women don't tell men. Women in general aren't as much into showy gestures as men in general seem to think they are. It's the every day caring and thinking and listening that counts, not the big show at the holiday. Give yourself a break - the perfect exciting gift just might mean more to you than it does to her.

Thanks for crapping on me when I was trying to help, buddy  Here I thought I could take my shitty lousy rotten fucking experience and use it for some good, but no... I get shit on by someone I don't even know. Happy Holidays to you, too, I hope it works out.

69. No Offense Intended And I Apologize For Hurting Your Feelings, But
I did take the original post you wrote as a knock against me. It was assuming I didn't listen to her, don't pay attention enough to her to know what she'd want, am inattentive, or just clueless in some way such as they guys at the makeup counter.

I took issue with that as I listen to her intently, am constantly caring and sweet, am quite attentive to her needs, etc.. and I didn't like the assumption that it wasn't the case.

I did not, however, mean to upset you if you had the best intentions and were trying to help, and thank you for it. I just really took it at first as a "well if you just listened to her you wouldn't have to come in here and ask" type post. I hope you can understand why I may have misread it that way.

Regardless, god bless you and thank you for trying to help, and please accept my apologies.

64. Here's some female bashing to even it out
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=4486135&mesg_id=4487228

The same answer applies to LionessPriyanka. Is that female bashing? No. It's about taking people as individuals.

51. My vote would be for some sort of leisure activity that you
could do together.

Maybe tickets to a play or a concert, a gift certificate for massages at a spa for the two of you, maybe an overnight stay or weekend trip to a local romantic spot or place of interest, or even just a hand-written card promising to take her out to some extravagant local restaurant you think she would like. Similarly, you could get a dual membership to a local art museum you think she would be interested in, and then make a point to take her there when each new exhibit opens---or if she's an animal lover, you could get a dual membership to the zoo. A gym membership would be a good idea if she has expressed interest in getting into better shape (avoid this if you think she will take it the wrong way).

As far as "stuff" goes, I'm always happy to get:
- a cashmere sweater (it's the sort of luxurious item a lot of people feel guilty about buying for themselves, but they're very warm, comfortable, and classy. And most stores have them on sale right now.)
- chocolate (not candy bars---real chocolate, like Fran's or Godiva.)

Good luck! :hi:

57. I'd love to get the following:
1) Series tickets to something you both enjoy--music, theater, sports It's a way of saying, "I want to spend my leisure time with you."

2) Clothes that you think she'd look good in (but peek into the closet to see what size she wears for the item you are planning to get.

3) A weekend away at some nice place

4) A gift certificate for a spa
