Our family's roots come to rest in Plaistow, West Sussex. The parts of my family who did well still live and work in the village. Apparently my great great grandfather lost his inheritance at some point so he moved out of the village.

Like a lot of English country villages it's not changed a lot since these times:

Admittedly the view isn't the same - the black and white photo is looking at the church from the other side.

But the place doesn't change much architechurally. New houses were built (for the short time we lived in Plaistow we lived behind the house you see in the black and white photo in a mini-development) but not that many. The place has one church, one chapel, one pub, one post office, one school, one shop, I believe there's still a vegetarian restaurant, one cricket club. The phone numbers changed in 1993 but before that the village had 3 digit phone numbers. Ours was 201. Being small, it shares services with neighouring villages... the parish church and the school are aligned with Kirdford to the south; the parish council and other village administration is shared with Ifold to the east.

And unlike rural America, there's public transport. Heck, there's more buses that run through that rural village than in my corner of NE Greensboro!
