I'm not sure I like Firefox
I get a lot of broken photo links at DU and I have to reboot two or three times a day because all of a sudden it'll just stop finding servers. :grr:

Oh, and photo threads take a lot longer to load.

There's a bajillion things wrong with AOL, but its built-in version of IE never pulled this crap.

1. Hey, I know this is from the nasty site
but use their bandwidth to your advantage!

This will help you tweak firefox so it loads stuff faster!

22. Yeah, I saw that
But there's no "edit string" function. Closest is "new string," and I was afraid that'd add a string, which isn't what I want. Which option do I use?

34. Aargh!
Okay, the menu I get has:

Copy name
Copy value
New >
Toggle
Reset

None of the choices under "New" seem viable, so I'm guessing it's "toggle" or "reset."

Gawd, I feel like an idjit. :banghead:

37. WHOA!
I figured it out. It's "toggle" for the strings with true/false, yes/no values. If the values have variables, i.e. numbers, "modify" comes up.

And it's way faster!

Thanks, Kitchy. :loveya:

Still, my puter feels kinda creepy with data glommed from... that place. :puke:

I'll just type with gloves on.

44. You can get the same tips from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/tips#oth_rendering

That way you don't have to visit that digusting site :)

If you get Firefox, I'd recommend three extensions that will make your browsing experience more enjoyable. 1. NoScript, 2. Tab Mix Plus, and 3. AdBlock (with Filterset.G Updater. With these three (four) extensions, you can pretty much control cookies, ads, and other things that would otherwise be placed on your computer.

Bonus extensions include Greasemonkey and Google's Safe Browsing plug-in.

47. Ok, those are some really good tips. Here they are for anyone not wanting
to sully their hands in FR:

NOTE: This is only for BROADBAND connections:

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to a number like 30 (means it will make 30 requests at once).

3. Last right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.
-----------------------------------

Thanks KW for the link. This really speeds things up.

6. I am a die hard Netscape user to this day.
I hate the new Netscape though. I can't find any skins to make it look like classic Netscape. I hate IE and Firefox. If you ask me, they are one in the same. I'm just comfortable using Netscape, I guess. It does the job and if there is a crash, it's only the browser and not the whole computer. No rebooting necessary after a crash. I am currently using version 7.2 and don't want anything else.

10. True. I was just thinking about how they operate.
Like where you click to get this or that. I am just so used to Netscape that I don't want anything else. At school, they have IE on all the computers, but Firefox is on a couple of them. I tried it, but still prefer Netscape. Too bad they won't let you download it at school. The computers will let you download Firefox but ban Netscape. I don't know why.

46. Jamastiene -
Forget Netscape (I'm an old Netscape user from way back -always hated IE) - download and install MOZILLA. It's almost identical to Netscape 6-7.xx - but much better.

http://www.mozilla.org/products/mozilla1.x/

I prefer Mozilla to the standalone Firefox browser.

is there a way to set firefox up to automatically make a new tab when you click a link, versus having to set one up, or right clicking on the link?

31. I must like Mozilla better then.
I tried Netscape 8 and it sits unused on my computer right now. I didn't like it as much as earlier versions of Netscape. I do wish I could get a skin to make it look like God 3.0 but still operate using current standard like it does now.

43. There is no such thing as Netscape any more
The current Netscape is nothing but old versions of Firefox and IE rolled into one; the prior versions were just skinned and ad-ware ladden versions of the Mozilöla browsers. Certainly the worst you can do.

There is a Mozilla project doing new versions of the old Netscape suite tradition, it is called Seamonkey:

I think you're crazy. I've been using Firefox since it was called Firebird (quite some time ago, early beta shit) and have loved it since then.

But if you really don't like Firefox, try Opera. Just don't go back to IE, for the love of everything good and holy.

Even with these flaws — which are apparently easy to fix, if I weren't such a Winblows moran — it's still leaps and bounds ahead of IE — which is, of course, the spawn of Satan's much-nastier cousin.
