19. That's the best line in the film, too
as far as I'm concerned.

But everybody quotes "Here's looking at you, kid" and "We'll always have Paris," and misquotes "If she can stand it, I can! Play it!"

Meh.

25. "I waited to have my first drink with you."
Close?

That and "This oughta take the sting outta gettin' occupied!"

There are some great one-liners in that film.

I don't watch it anymore.

28. I don't remember the second one at all
The first one... I know it's when he's getting drunk the night after he sees Ilsa again, but he had a lot of good lines in that scene.

These are two of my favorites from the film:

"What in heaven's name brought you to Casablanca?"
"My health. I came to Casablanca for the waters."
"The waters? What waters? We're in the desert."
"I was misinformed."

"What is your nationality?"
"I'm a drunkard."

29. Second one is Sam's
They're in the apartment, and Sam's popping champagne. It's after (or maybe just before) he's announced that the wine steward has said he'll water his garden with champagne before he let's the Nazis have it. Kinda reminds me of the old line about how after the war every Frenchman who ever served a Nazi a cold cup of coffee thought he was part of the resistance.

I *love* the "I'm a drunkard" line.

My favorite, though, overall is "There are some places in New York even the Germans shouldn't go" or something to that effect. He says it with all the minimalist bravado of a kid who knows just which streets.

30. Oh, wow
I don't remember hardly any of Sam's lines, apart from "My watch stopped" and "Ain't you never goin' to bed?" and when he's telling Ilsa to stay away from Rick.

And I was shocked — shocked, I tell you — to find out Dooley Wilson neither played the piano nor sang in the film. Both were dubbed.

Oh... trivia: Howard Koch, who re-wrote the script into the screenplay, also wrote the "War of the Worlds" radio drama for Orson Welles and the Mercury Theatre.

31. Sam's best scene, IMHO
is in the Paris flashback. Shows a shocking level of integration, given the period. Gives him external reality from the bar.

Local community theatre did a Reader's Theatre of W.O.W. this past Halloweeen, so I had run across Howard Koch.

My favorite little piece of trivia is the authorship of the screenplay for "To Have and Have Not." William Faulkner. Blew me away. Also explained why the screenplay was rotated through about nine dimensions away from the book/anthology.

23. Yeeeooowwwch!
Edited on Wed Dec-21-05 01:11 AM by Jamastiene
I woke up late tonight after staying up all night again. All I wanted was a quick refreshing drink of Dr Pepper. I had to open a new bottle of it. Normally, breaking that little plastic seal is ALMOST effortless. Not tonight. My he-man stepdad must have put that cap on that bottle.

I went to open it and noticed way more resistance than normal. So I put my left hand on the upper portion of the bottle and used my right hand to try to open it. I'm lefthanded and use my left hand/arm for dexterity, but when it comes to strength and, ahem, endurance  I always use my right hand/arm.

Well, things didn't quite go as I planned. I put my best effort forward to open the bottle and all of a sudden this sharp pain started in between my shoulder blades especially in that area closest to my left shoulder blades/upper back. It shot all the way up through my neck and down my left arm all at the same time. I ran through the house because it hurt so bad. I was looking for something to slam my body up against to take my mind off the intense pain.

I finally ended up pushing my back flat against the wall as hard as I could. It stopped the pain, but as soon as I tried to move away, I got another sharp pain in the same place. I got pissed off at that point. I went and opened that bottle useing my most defiant, angry energy. It opened like a piece of cake, but now I am still hurting. I tried using the heating pad and took some pain pills.

I should have just stayed in the damn bed tonight. I am taking my aunt to the VA fpr an appointment tomorrow anyhow. This means I will have to drive all day long and drag her in and out of the car with this sharp pain shooting through my upper back, left shoulder, neck, and left arm every time I move. She will of course not want to hurt me, because she is super nice like that. So she will probably want to take more time than normal getting in and out of the car. All I need to do is keep moving the area to work the soreness out. We will at some point discuss that I have to work it out and that helping her will actually be the best thing for it. She will feel needlessly guilty because she is just like that. I will feel guilty because my soreness will make her feel guilty. Unless I can find a way to either hide the pain when that sharp shooting pain hits me, or get rid of the pain by morning to avoid that.

I want tomorrow to be a good day for us both. She rarely ever gets to leave the house and I rarely enjoy driving through this little shithole town looking at the new stuff Walmart has dragged in along with it. She will be amazed at how much the town has changed in the last few months since she was able to leave the house. I will be happy to see her actually get to see something besides the four walls of this dinky little place and the boring old television she watches all day long. I must get rid of this pain by morning without overdosing on pain medicines.

Some days, staying in bed would have been the best option. If I only hadn't done this trying to get something to drink. If only I had stayed in bed.

*sigh*
I agree with you.
