Dammit! My single-bulb kitchen light fixture just burned out.
It takes a damn 10' step ladder to change that bulb. There is a wall sconce and the range hood light. But what a pain. I've got to get a multiple-bulb fixture hung in the kitchen.

They sell them at Lowe's and Home Depot.

4. There's still the matter of the tiny little screws
that hold the globe on the fixture. So, use the ladder to get that off, climb down and unscrew the bulb with the pole thingy, use the same thingy to put the new bulb in, then climb back up the ladder to replace the globe.
And get a new long-life flourescent bulb. It'll last longer and cost less to use.

5. You can always just duct tape a tiny little screwdriver
to the end of the pole thingie.

6. Of course! Duct tape!
That's normally my first choice. Then make a basket of duct tape to catch the globe when it falls down.

9. I just checked my light fixture.
First, it's much lower.
The little screws don't have slots, just knurled knobs.

10. Good idea!
Ultimately I want one of those 15-light fixtures. But the long-life fluorescent bulb is a great idea!

8. Go compact fluorescent in the replacement
It saves you the trip to go up there for another 4-5 years.

11. One light in my two-bulb kitchen fixture is out....
Blew on Friday evening. I am terrified of heights (not as high as yours, of course) and don't know how to work the fixture. The caregiver who comes during the week to be with my mother is fine with heights and understands the fixture, so the honor of changing the bulb is hers.

Last time, both bulbs in the fixture blew...over a weekend. I was left with the small 60-watt sink light only, but decided to move a living room lamp into the kitchen so I could see. It worked, and the caregiver changed the bulbs on Monday.

I feel your pain....

12. I am forbidden ladders and roofs ..
My best friend, an Airbus A-320 captain at my airline (US Airways), just had his 13th major surgery in 16 months. He fell off a ladder on 7/1/2004.
