Okay, my wife and I are looking for a good Christmas movie to watch
Edited on Sat Dec-17-05 07:00 PM by expatriot
We want something we have never seen before (we've already watched our favorites, Miracle on 34th, Holiday Inn, White Christmas, Holiday Affair, It's a Wonderful Life, A Muppet's Christmas...

We want to see something NEW but we HATE the stupid irreverent Christmas comedies that have been the name of the game for a long time. I refuse to watch that crap. When did they stop making high quality, feel-good Christmas stories? If I wanted irreverent tinsel-covered crap I'd watch a sitcom's Christmas episode.

Any suggestions?

27. we've seen it. We ended up getting Noel that came out last year
with Susan Suranda(sp?). It had some real good parts... and some real lame parts. worth the rental.

3. Technically not a Christmas movie....
but it takes place between Thanksgiving and New Years. And it's a wonderful flick:

4. I know a lot of people like "A Christmas Story"
although I don't think I've seen it all the way through.

It's a story about a boy in the forties (?) who desperately wants a BB gun for Christmas.

16. "A Christmas Story" -- absolutely wonderful!

In 1940's Indiana, Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) dreams of the ideal Christmas gift, a genuine Red Ryder 200-Shot Carbine Action Air Rifle. But when gruff dad (Darren McGavin) and doting mom (Melinda Dillon) quote the usual saying, "You'll shoot your eye out!" You'll see the snowsuit paralysis to the triple-dog-dare of the tongue-on-a-frozen-flagpole gambit. Ralphie has hilarious qualities like taking down the local bully (Zack Ward) ! You'll enjoy this holiday comedy!

5. Here are some ideas, old and new.
Edited on Sat Dec-17-05 10:08 PM by CBHagman
While You Were Sleeping. This is set entirely during the Christmas season and is as much a Valentine to families (yeah, I'm mixing holidays ) as it is to finding the right life partner.

A Christmas Story. Yes, there's some crudeness and irreverence, but the heart of the movie is sweet. I heard Jean Shepherd tell this story on the radio one Christmas night more than 30 years ago and found it hilarious.

The Lion in Winter. Okay, this is talky, occasionally violent, and strictly for the adults. But it is a classic, and it is a Christmas movie.

Meet Me in St. Louis. I'll bet you already have this on your list.

The Shop Around the Corner. Classic 1940s comedy with Jimmy Stewart and a fine supporting cast. The story concludes on Christmas Eve. Yes, the story was retold in In the Good Old Summertime and You've Got Mail.

The Man Who Came to Dinner. I'll bet your family already watches this classic.

Since You Went Away. Be sure to have a box of tissues nearby.

One caveat on Love Actually: If you have kids, screen this without them. There are plot points and scenes you might not want to expose them to, and the same goes for the language. But it has its heart in the right place.

On edit: Sleepless in Seattle and When Harry Met Sally also have Christmas/New Year's Eve scenes.

6. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.
A wonderful movie. 1945. Dorothy McGuire, James Dunn, Joan Blondell, Lloyd Nolan, James Gleason and BS Pulley. Directed by Elia Kazan. Full of grace, sacrifice, loss and redemption.

11. Love Actually...
It's the best Christmas movie I've ever seen. If you haven't seen it, what are you waiting for? It was made by the same people who made The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Four Weddings and a Funeral. It's awesome, and it has Alan Rickman, Hugh Grant, Laura Linney, Emma Thompson, and Martin Freeman (Arthur, HHGTTG), just to name a few...Or you could go traditional and go with National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, although in my current mindset, the Griswalds just end up pissing me off.

18. Love Actually IS THE BEST contemporary Christmas movie EVER.... It will
make you laugh, cry and just be happy about living a nice, ordinary life... as all the characters in it do.

Please, please, please watch it with someone you love.

12. Just thought of another.
I took a real liking to the movie A Midwinter's Tale (known in the U.K. as In the Bleak Midwinter), which concerns a troupe of actors trying to mount a production of Hamlet at Christmastime. Very funny and life-affirming. I like to watch it every year.

The same goes for Peter's Friends, which is set during the week between Christmas and New Year's.

19. Comfort and Joy
I'm drawing a blank on who made it right now -- Scottish guy, Bill something, who made Gregory's Girl and Local Hero.

Very funny and sweet.

Forsythe, finally came back to me.
