I don't know the formula to use. I think you subtract something from somethHow to figure out miles per gallon that I am getting in my car????

I don't know the formula to use. I think you subtract something from something then divide something else by something else, but I don't know what.

My numbers are: 43,647 miles on my car and 6.825 gallons of gas. Then: 43,840 and 6.729.

Help!

Thanks

1. here you go
43840 - 43647 = 193 then 193/6.825 = 28.3 mpg

what kind of car do you have?

2. I just bought a 2000 Chevrolet Metro. I had another car that got good mil
mileage but cost me a lot because of my bad insurance situation. The difference in price of my Metro can buy a LOT of gas. But I had no idea of how to go about figuring it out. Thanks a bunch for the help.

3. Reset the trip meter to zero every time you fill up.
Edited on Sat Dec-17-05 11:51 AM by El Fuego
Then when you fill up the next time, divide the number of miles on the trip meter by the number of gallons you just put in.

According to your numbers:

43,840-43,647 = 193 miles

193 miles / 6.729 gallons = 28.7 miles per gallon!

Note: this is only true if you are filling up the tank every time.

You use the amount of gas you just put in, because this is an indication of how much gas you used to go the 193 miles, assuming the tank was filled both times.

4. This one is correct - sbj405 used the wrong gallon number
And El Fuego raises the important point - it only works if you filled the gas tank when you reocrded your first milage, and then fill your tank when you record the second milage and record the number of gallons you put in.

Then it's (milage2 - mileage1)/(gallons)

8. It's not a bad idea to keep a running log of this.
'cause if the milage takes a sudden dip, it's a good indication that something bad is happening with the car.

6. It's really easy to remember like this:
per means divide. Therefore Miles per gallon = Miles divided by gallons.

travel 400 miles on 10 gallons of gas, 400/10= 40 miles per gallon

Works the same with miles per hour.

7. fill tank
set trip meter to zero

drive

fill tank

calculate # of miles from the trip meter by the number of gallons it took to fill tank
