Help! I just don't get this weather report!
My neighbors houses have disappeared!

Soupy thick fog right now....eery and quiet. Can't even see neighborhood houses!

Weather advisory says:

Fog will once again form over much of the valley and is expected
to become more dense and widespread overnight. Visibility at many
locations will drop below one quarter of a mile... and in some
areas... may even be reduced to just a few hundred feet.

A dense fog advisory means visibilities will frequently be
reduced to less than one quarter mile. If driving... slow
down... use your low beam headlights...

and leave plenty of distance
ahead of you.

How can you LEAVE plenty of distance ahead of you??? :wtf:

If you can't see in the fog, HOW DO YOU DO THIS???

I am totally freaked out now!

(and enjoying a nice 420 and Kaluaha on the rocks :smoke: )

6. They're Lying!
Edited on Tue Dec-13-05 11:15 PM by Whoa_Nelly
The weather people are LYING!

Around here when they say 1/4 mile, it means stay off the country roads where all the moisture is the thickest and stay away from all the canal areas or you'll either run into a semi that's crossing in front of you, or you'll end up in the water.

Really...that's what it really means :)

Two days ago some guy was driving in his pickup out in the country near here. Was cruising along and hit a semi trailer broadside. The pickup didn't stop...just had it's cab sheared off and continued under and beyond the truck trailer for another 500+ feet.

Ag district...

*******spooky fog ********

2. Truth is....
.... with fog that thick (I'm assuming your neighborhood houses are within 100' or so), you should not be driving at all.

I HATE fog when driving, and luckily, it doesn't happen very often in Texas.

3. I'm on the west side of the valley and we can still see stars
Fog will truly set in by 10pm, or so, over here, and that means just because it appears clear, slow down because you could drive into the tule fog faster then you could spit. Been there, done that - fog lines are our best friends on nights like this. The woodstove is fired up and I'm popping open a bottle of homemade Pinot Noir. Cheers!

4. I spent more than three years near Merced, CA
Edited on Tue Dec-13-05 11:12 PM by Ptah
The fog there (San Joaquin Valley) is the stuff that
legends are made off.

I remember getting on top of a car to determine the color of the traffic light.

:silly: :wtf: :scared:

9. *WoW* I haven't lived here for 23 years...
this is new again to me.

The fog also dulls sounds...it really is being underwater at times.

10. One time we were driving west of Davis, California in the fog....
and navigating at about five MPH with the help of the fog line when it suddenly disappeared. I got out to investigate where it had gone and discovered I had stopped in the middle of a country intersection. I was lucky to get home safe that night.

11. Scary!
It's insane to go out when it's like this. I can see the fog at the back porch light moving by like how snow looks in the outside lighting.

Just like closing down for sand storms or ice, seems there should be road closures for fog at times. Used to hate driving to the school where I worked when I lived here years ago. There were NEVER and Fog Delay start days.

...am tucked in for the night here.

13. Hi, Whoa_Nelly
I was so focused on *my* thread, that is missed your
update.
I was in the Air Force and lived off base near Merced.
The house I rented was surrounded by an almond orchard. I grew up on the
prairie of North Central Montana.
Trees, humidity and green were foriegn to me.

I had forgotten about the dullness of the air.

:pals:

It's good to see you again.

5. If you find yourself close to the car in front of you, slow down...
And drop back a bit.

Sounds simple enough to me.
