1. Any list that does not include 'Solar Radio' should be dismissed.
I mean, am I right, or what?

3. Did I ever tell you my brother saw them in Dallas?
This was 1990 or thereabouts - near the end. Playing a packed auditorium. The end of the set came around and the fans fucking rushed the stage - total anarchy.

8. The Who & Rolling Stones use to be in the Top 10 but...
...after numerous "Farewell Concerts" and "Last Tour Ever" stuff I got bored with their material. Had I made this post back in 1985 and not 2005 both bands would have been in the top #10. Of course Green Day wouldn't have been - go figure!

62. gotta include the E Street Band
won't go see Bruce without them. Saw the "Born to Run" tour, and it ruined me forever - it's the concert I judge all other concerts by.

And on a "how clueless am I?" note: I've been into Buffett for 25 years, and it took me until about 10 years ago to get the "coral reefer" pun. And yes, I did smoke way too much dope in high school.

9. Really, really tough...
I love Dylan. And the Beatles, and the Stones...

But there's so many good bands out there, and even grwat albums by mediocre bands. I own something like 15,000 CDs. Narrowing my favorite bands down to 10 is a little tough. Depends on my mood.

15. Zappa could make top 20 but no way I'm booting ELO
the first album I ever bought with my own money I earned back when I was 13 years old (ok it was birthday money but damnit, I earned it!) was Out of the Blue by ELO. THey've been a favorite of mine since then.

Green Day is great but you post about them here and some folks get snooty and call them sell-outs. Sure, it's really sucky they'd produce an album that has an anti-war/anti-bush tone to it and sell 10million+ Might as well buy Jessica Simpson stuff.

44. People say the same thing about ELO.
Heard it a million times. Now there's a commercial with "Livin' Thing" as the theme song. It wouldn't be like that if their music didn't have both popular appeal AND staying power.

Out of the Blue is definitely in my top ten all-time greatest albums.

Grateful Dead
Bob Dylan
Little Feat
Allman Bros
Rage Against the Machine

4. Creedence Clearwater Revival
5. Neil Young
6. Pink Floyd
7. Allman Brothers Band
8. Gov't Mule
9. The Beatles

Him, and a guitarist named Tony Norman (going back to a 2-guitar line-up like the early days). I don't have info on the new album yet. Their website is promoting their 2006 our, though.

"Blessed Are The Sick" is as much of a landmark album as Sabbath's "Paranoid" was, 20 years earlier. Have seen them live twice, and never disappointed.

58. That's not Skynyrd
That's am impostor band run by 2 original members, and they should be ashamed.

The REAL band, which died in 1977 in the plane crash, were huge Jimmy Carter supporters (courtesy of lead singer and leader Ronnie Van Zant), raising money for him at concerts, etc.

They also had songs against handguns, for the environment, and against Vietnam. That was long ago...

Too sad about the misguided souls in the fake version...

A few words about Cookie: Although one of the many local bands which I had the pleasure to associate with over the years, Cookie has been only one of two which have touched me musically enough to make this list. I have mentioned this band often before but nary a word of response from my fellow DUers. I have convinced many people that this band is terrific by taking them to their first Cookie show. Each and every one of them became instant fans. (Younger women especially so). I suggest listening, if you can, to both albums. My fave songs from it are not listed here, a pity, (one is about triumphing over an abusive boyfriend), but the selections are all pretty good any way. "Bad For Me" off the first is about the singer, I know her, she is just like this song. "Mr. President" shows the hope the singer had for bush as he first took office, she was let down of course, by the end of the song: "Once again, shown the past, have times changed as much as that? What we've all come to expect, for ourselves is SO MUCH LESS." echoes her bitterness. If you actually get to listen to those two selections and like what you hear, go over to the second album, the one with the little girl sticking her tongue out and hit "sit back and play all" You won't be disappointed.

I had a hard enough time picking just 10!

My definition of "band" has 3 or more members. Therefore, acts like Moby, OMD, Tears For Fears do not qualify.

Here they are:

B-52's
Cake
The Cure
Depeche Mode
Echo & The Bunnymen
Guadalcanal Diary
The Jesus and Mary Chain
Love and Rockets
Social Distortion
U2

Bubbling under: REM, The Specials, The Go-Go's, XTC, Madness.....

The Beach Boys (have a greater output than the Byrds, who really are equal - and the Rolling Stones are very close behind)

51. You can't lump Green Day in with Pearl Jam, STP, Hole, etc
All of those bands are from the Grunge/Seattle sound started by Nirvana. Green Day is more of a Post-Punk type sounds. I guess what I'm saying is that Nirvana broke into new territory that made all those other bands very popular (and some of my favorites too), but I don't think the Nirvana influence had any affect on whether Green Day would have made it since Green Day is such a completely different genre of music.

48. Well, I Have A Couple I'd Change
But, not many. I'd get rid of Pink Floyd, Green Day, and ELO and replace them with The Fixx, Talking Heads, and The Beatles. I'm not sure of my order though. Just a fungible Top Ten.

66. My top twelve, currently:
Not necessarily in order...

Allman Bros. Band
The Band (with or w/o Dylan)
Beatles
Stones
Santana
The Doors
The Who
Bruce & E Street
Pretenders
Ramones
Clash
Buddy Holly and the Crickets

I wish I could come up with a single band representing the doo wop era, but I can't, probably because they were really singing groups with backup bands. I also can't come up with a single band representing the bluegrass and blues genres, which are dominated by individual performers.
