The RetroLounge Daily Poem THread (Mon 12/12/05)
Wedding-Ring

My wedding-ring lies in a basket
as if at the bottom of a well.
Nothing will come to fish it back up
and onto my finger again.
It lies
among keys to abandoned houses,
nails waiting to be needed and hammered
into some wall,
telephone numbers with no names attached,
idle paperclips.
It can't be given away
for fear of bringing ill-luck.
It can't be sold
for the marriage was good in its own
time, though that time is gone.
Could some artificer
beat into it bright stones, transform it
into a dazzling circlet no one could take
for solemn betrothal or to make promises
living will not let them keep? Change it
into a simple gift I could give in friendship?

Denise Levertov

1. Cold dead metal, but haunted still
Material things have a life we invest in them, don't they?

How are you today? :hi:

4. Pretty sad, actually.
bone-crushing, numbingly sad. Yet somehow still hopeful.

How odd is that?

2. I can really feel
the loneliness in this poem, and remembrance of times that have past but not forgotten. Sad, sad poem.

12. You have been choosing some
mighty powerful poems. Here's one with a little different theme by Wendell Berry.

The Peace of Wild Things

When despair grows in me
and I wake in the middle of the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting for their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free

3. It's all that's left ...
of love that once was alive ...

of love that shown as brilliantly as gold.

Gone is the luster ...

along with the lust.

A cold band of metal ...

as cold as my heart is all that remains.

5. My dear RetroLounge....
We invest our non-verbal symbols with so much heavy meaning.....

We need those symbols, but oh the power they have to wound us......

This is such a poignant and heartfelt poem.....

Hope your day finds you feeling better as it progresses.....

I've got your back, my dear......

7. Pawn Shoppe Heart - Von Bondies
I found my heart
In a pawn shop, baby
You took me for dead - dead
By the way - you still
I am way past tales
I'm bored and I'm crazy
You took all my good love
And gave it all away

I've been on the backstreet
I'm all alone
I've been on the hotseat
I'm gone - I'm gone
Sweet little love of mine
Take all you can
I'm your pawn shop lover
I'm your pawn shop, broken-heart man

With all your good looks
I still have nothing
Breaking the whip on my back like a man
Still have nothing
Take everything you want
Take all you can
I'm your pawn shop lover
I'm your pawn shop, broken-heart man

Good morning back at you...

11. No, no, no -
Salvage what you can, get the cash,
and there's always the possibility of getting it back.
If it's meant to be, it will still be there.
If not, you've already let it go.

I'm sorry your heart is breaking.
You deserve so much better... and someday, you'll get it.

 and :*, darling.
