Gibson for Governor?

Actor Mel Gibson has been tipped by some Californian Republicans as the next showbiz governor of the state, in a bid to oust increasingly unpopular Arnold Schwarzenegger from office. The Braveheart star has become the subject of an electioneering website boasting an online petition begging him to stand for office next year - despite Gibson never having voiced a desire to enter politics. Schwarzenegger's poll ratings have plummeted in recent weeks after a succession of ballot losses and the controversial appointment of a Democrat as his chief of staff. Mike Spence, mastermind of the Gibson internet campaign and president of the state's Republican Assembly, says, "We have to look for alternatives to the governor because he's been behaving like someone who wants to go back to Hollywood." And Spence is eager to see Gibson as that replacement, praising the political credentials of films like The Passion Of The Christ and his outspoken views on stem cell research. He adds, "He's shown himself to be both fiscally and socially conservative, and the success of The Passion Of The Christ shows that he has the ability to reach out to people. We hope to meet with him and encourage him."

Seriously, is the state of the republican party so pathetic in California that they have to go after every loopjob actor to run for governor? Mel Gibson - oh boy, that's a doozy. We'll appoint his dad in charge of Jewish Relations

1. The GOP is obsessed with celebrity
They've also speculated about the Frasier guy challenging Feinstein or Boxer (Kelsey Grammar?)

Not to mention Sonny Bono, Fred Grandy, Clint Eastwood, Fred Dalton Thompson, Ronald Reagan...

And, remember after the sex-club scandal last year forced Obama's opponent to drop out of the race, they speculated about Mike Ditka and a few other celebs before Alan Keyes carpetbagged into town.

2. oh and you can add Lynn Swann to the fray too
along with attempting to run the son of Legendary Penn State football coach Joe Paterno for a race (boy was that guy a loser if you ever saw one).

I have no problem with celebrities running for office but it seems the republican party is so fricking desparate to win that they go after them because of that desparation

6. The Democrats should run this Gibson...

I'm sure it would be able to do a better job than Mel and Arnold combined.

7. They need good actors. Look at * and his cabal...
That lot couldn't be good liars if the cosmos depended on it...

And they don't need to be, the American public saw fit to keep 'em in power. (in 2004. 13 months later and now they need good actors to make up for the maxwellsmartisms of the cabal's chief...)

11. I thought Mel Gibson was a Democrat?
I know he's a religious nut, but I'd always heard he voted and supported Democrats. Was I misinformed?

12. They've all been indicted
Or jailed, or resigned in disgrace. :D They have NOBODY.

I wouldn't put any stock in the Gibson rumors. No one here is taking them seriously.
