Dictator Shower Gel: "East German Erich's Shower Gel" Hits Store Shelves

A NEW shower gel named after Erich Honecker, the long-time leader of the former communist East Germany, has outraged former victims of his regime, a report has said.

Called "East German Erich's shower gel", the product bears the communist hammer and sickle insignia and sells for between 2.49 and six euros ($3.90-$9.40).

Since it hit the shelves a few days ago, the Stasi Memorial in Berlin, which is named after the former East German secret police, has received angry phone calls from victims of the former regime, memorial director Hubertus Knabe told Bild newspaper.

"These items are simply tasteless. They offend the victims of the SED," Mr Knabe said, referring to the former East German communist party.

Wolfgang Kockrow, who was arrested for spying by the East German regime, said the gel's makers were taking "ostalgie", the German word describing nostalgia for the East German era, too far.

"It is unbearable to see how such 'ostalgie' glorifies a criminal regime," he said.

An association for the victims of Stalinism, which groups former dissidents persecuted by the East German authorities, has announced that it plans to hold a protest at the launch of the shower gel.
