:headbang:

Terrific crop this round, i must say...!

Rock Hall of Fame Announces Inductees

Black Sabbath, Miles Davis and the Sex Pistols are among five musical legends to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation will hold its induction ceremony March 13 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan, the organization announced Monday.

Also to be inducted into the class of 2006: 1980s New Wave band Blondie and Southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss, who founded A&M records in 1962, will receive a lifetime achievement award in the non-performer category.

Inductees into the side-men category will be announced at a later date.

1. Where's Mellencamp?!?!
Don't tell me he didn't make it. If so, what BS. Blondie before Mellencamp?

What really irks me is that Bob Seger made it before Mellencamp and how can an organization ignore a person like Mellencamp that is always out there talking about freedom of expression and free speech.

What crap.

Black Sabbath?!?! WTF?!?!

I recommend you find and play one song - Paranoid - as i suspect that would help explain the "WTF" about Sabbath.

lets argue about colors (it will be just as meaningful).

And time has EVERYTHING to do with it, as time is a fair judge.
You will not find any 1 hit wonders inducted into the Hall of Fame (I hope).
You will find those who have spent a majority of their career (many times an entire generation) producing work.

Cheers

22. It has nothing to do with time, or so I thought...
just what has Blondie added to rock music other than meaningless blathering about her formerly time as a Playboy Bunny.

Mellencamp has been one in a long line to add at least integrity to rock and roll - FarmAid, free speech issues, speaking out, focusing on roots music, et cetera.

Read up:

Mellencamp basically doesn't have any music history.

56. I must be weird or something. I like both Blondie
and Mellencamp. It's 25 years since the first top 10 hit, I believe before they can be inducted. You can bet Mellencamp will go in sometime in the near future too. Need not worry.

62. Yes, I know it is 25 yrs, but Mellencamp's growth and...
his passion for music and free expression and speech has eclipsed so many of the artists all ready inducted.

For anyone who doesn't see Mellencamp's "history" go buy The Lonesome Jubilee and Big Daddy. His growth from Scarecrow to those was amazing.

It was like listening to a different artist.

I'm not trying to start any sort of argument, but Mellencamp has done much more for music (not the music industry) than many others all ready inducted.

46. Huh?
Blondie was around at the launch of the American New Wave movement. They were contemporaries of Television, Talking Heads, et al and they were among the first to incorporate elements of disco & soul rhythms to the punk/wave ethos.

Seems like enough to me.

What really, really ticks me off about this entire selection is that Mellencamp has always been about expression and speech and this rotten industry seems to have completely ignore that. Guess maybe he has pissed them off or something.

Maybe the song Pop Singer was his albatross.

2. A&M Records
Should know, I guess, is that A&M signed the Sex Pistols after EMI dropped them and pressed God Save The Queen on the A&M label.

Alpert and Moss then wussed out, paid the Pistols $24,000 and kicked them off A&M. Then they destroyed all the copies of God Save The Queen. Only a few survive.

No offense to the Green Days and other "contemporaries" but i sure hope someone with some "gravitas" (i hate that word but it works here) does the honors. Maybe the surviving members of the Pistols will do like the Clash did two years ago - graciously accept the recognition, raise a bit of hell, and then sit down without playing at all.

and they were all playing together in the celebrity soccer game in LA.

Steve Jones is actually a pretty good soccer player (he was in good shape back then) - Ian is pretty tough, too.

It was also the last time I saw George Best on a soccer field.

And make no apologies about it. But I suspect that we are from two different generations as well as two different backgrounds. It doesn't matter. But you may want to spell the name of the band correctly. It's Lynyrd Skynyrd, not Lynard Skynard. Helluva guitar attack and entertaining. I saw the original and enjoyed he hell out of them. Think I should play some right now.

19. To each his own.
It is impossible to quantify something as subjective as musical tastes. Something like the RnR HOF has to come down to what a particular artist has brought to their particular genre of rock and roll. More than any other band, Skynyrd is Southern Rock. Unless of course you are a Allman Brothers fan. I am sure that they will want to disagree on that. lol!

40. I'd politely disagree, Skynyrd belongs.
And I'm not a huge fan. Skynyrd was hugely popular in the 70's, and they had a number of AOR hits to back up the career. You still can't turn on a classic rock station without hearing them.

Gimme Three Steps
Sweet Home Alabama
What's That Smell?
Gimme Back my Bullets
Freebird
They Call Me the Breeze

All of those songs and more are classics, whether you like the style or not. One could even construct an argument that says that Skynyrd was a forerunner of today's predominant Nashville country sound (witness Skynyrd's continued popularity with the "country" crowd), and as such, was more influential than most people give them credit for.

...but not this tribute band, one original member, with little brother singing because his own career failed JOKE that the band has turned into.

Just as with Sabbath, they better be inducting the original band. I could live with Dio's name being mentioned, but I'd puke if they bring up all those crappy solo albums Iommi released under the name between 1986 - 1996

48. Two original members
Gary Rossington and Billy Powell. I think they most likely inducted Skynyrd on the basis of their first four L.P.s. which were very very good. As another poster said, they, along with the Allman Brothers Band define Southern Rock. And The Allman Bros. were and are, a Blues Band first and foremost. I stand unapologetic, I love Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers Band. I don't give a damn about their politics or what others may think about them, I love 'em.

71. Miles had a major impact on Rock.....
Starting with "In a Silent Way" Miles reconceived jazz, emphasizing afrocentric beats as the base of his music and improvising over the top of that. "Bitches Brew" is the best expression of this and is one of the greatest percussion albums (Rock or Jazzz) ever recorded. Fundamentally it is the equivalent of using the backbeat to drive rock n roll but reinterpreted in a jazz context.

Miles frequently opened for the Gratefil Dead during this time in is career. When you hear "Dark Star" or Drums from a Dead concert, you are hearing Miles Davis' influence on Rock.

Miles also was very close to Jimi Hendrix and both had significant impact on the other. Listen to "Aghartha" sometime, it is basically an ode to Hendrix. Out of the Miles/Hendrix collaboration and friendship the whole genre of jazz/rock fusion was born.

45. If they induct Deep Purple, WHO exactly gets inducted?
Obviously the classic lineup (the one with both Gillan and Blackmore) would be the ones who were deserving. Maybe the original singer Rod Evans, and bassist Nic Simper, since "Hush" was a huge hit.

But do you induct David Covercheeseball? Joe Limp Turner? :puke:
All the other half assed replacements who have drifted in and out of the band since the REAL Purple once again split in the early 90's?

This is probably what made the Sabbath and Skynyrd inductments late, just the question of WHO exactly is counted among the inducted members of the band.

50. Great News
It's wonderful that the brilliant Miles Davis is being recognized for his contributions to Rock 'n Roll. His 1970s jazz-rock albums (Bitches Brew, A Tribute to Jack Johnson, On The Corner, Agharta, Pangea, and others) were some of the best rock music recorded during that decade.

58. This is a funny thread
Edited on Mon Nov-28-05 05:40 PM by DancingBear
In baseball, people argue all the time whether a .250 lifetime hitter should be in The Hall of Fame because he played 20 years and (eventually) led all shortstops in runs batted in.

I guess it happens in music, too. :)

Let's see - on one hand - Blondie, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Sex Pistols.
on the other hand - Beatles, Beach Boys, Rolling Stones.

"but they lead all shortstops in runs batted in!"

Carry on.

59. Skynyrd's induction is WAY overdue
The greatest American rock band of all time. Ronnie Van Zant had more soul and brains in his little finger than 1,000 preening and prancing poseurs who occupy the spotlight these days.

Fuck it anyway. Mojo Nixon was right when he called it the "Rock and Roll Hall of Lame."

65. Good to see someone
giving Skynrd the props they deserve.

Who was it, the Who, maybe, who got boo'd when they took the stage after Skynrd in England?

Anyone with a real appreciation for Skynrd should check out the Drive By Truckers' "Southern Rock Opera."

The spirit lives.

70. Pete Townshend chose them to open
On their 1973 Quadrophenia tour, he chose them to open for them in the U.S., when Skynyrd's debut came out. He really admired their work.

They idolized the Stones, and they even had the same management eventually. They overshadowed the Stones at the 1976 Knebworth Festival in England. The Stones were talking retirement after that tour, and it showed in their lackluster performances.

"Southern Rock Opera" is easily one of the best albums of all time, in my view. I love the DBT's!

60. Why not just put a statue of Johnny Rotten at fucking Disney World?
I hate the Classic Rock Hall of Fame- it is everything the idea of Rock & Roll is not.

Exhibits? I dont need a fucking VH1 exhibit- I need 2 speakers and a decent needle.

If you want a Rock & Roll Hall of fame, roll one up & come listen to Dr. Fate's LP collection.

While all the "rockers" are hanging out at the "Classic Rock" Disney land, I'll be listening to my Chuck Berry monos.

Thanks for listening

67. This is a bad bunch of inductees.
Let's face it. All the great artists are already in
the Hall of Fame and each year the
selections will get worse.

72. The Sex Pistols?
Apparently you don't have to display musical genius to get in there. One good album with about three good songs.
