The Brothers Quay
Anyone familiar with these guys? I downloaded a collection of their short films. Bizarre, creepy stuff. I love it.

I've also been told to check out Jan Švankmajer's work, so I'm downloading Faust and Alice.

Any other suggestions for weird and/or creepy films? They don't have to be animated.

3. Here's a really short one (most of them are at least 10 minutes)
It doesn't quite capture their full brilliance, but has the atmosphere, and it's only a minute and twenty-eight seconds long:

4. Their most famous work is the video for Tool's "Sober"
But the visual themes are current throughout their body of work; the empty china-doll heads, the gears, pulleys and string, the meat.

5. They actually never did any Tool videos...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brothers_Quay

"Some people mistakenly believe that the Quays are responsible for several music videos for Tool, but those videos were created by the band's guitarist, Adam Jones, who is also an animator and whose work is influenced by the Quays."

The influence is VERY noticable though.

9. wow!
I didn't know that... I assumed Tool had licensed a previous Quay work and re-cut it to work with the video.

6. I've seen their work

Coincidentally, I just watched Institute Benjamenta recently. I've also seen most of their short films as well. I haven't been able to catch their second full length film, The Piano Tuner of Earthquakes yet, I think it's still making the festival rounds. Terry Gilliam is a big fan and one of the producers on the new film.

Check out Guy Maddin, I think you might appreciate his films if you like the Quays.

10. Years ago, they did spots for MTV.
If I recall, they did real creepy stop-motion animation stuff. I'm not too familiar with anything else by them, but their work does look interesting.

12. That's the one!
I was just about to edit my post to say as much.

I wouldn't be surprised if they also inspired elements of the videotape from "The Ring".
