My last name might be changing, and I need new baby names!
My husband's grandpa owns a business in our hometown. Chris, my husband, is the only person in the family that could possibly pass the Lower name on to any children. (Lower is pronounced like Matt Lauer, not low, as opposite of high.)

Well, we're hoping to try for a MiniField in a year or so. Now, Grandpa has asked Chris if he'd consider taking the Lower name, to fulfill the old time tradition of passing the name on (and I think because we may inherit the business someday and he worries about the name changing). Neither of us are opposed to the change only because we know how much it means to Grandpa. And seeing as how Grandpa's paying Chris's way through college, and will possibly be a huge help with a down payment towards a house in 2 years, while we don't feel obligated, we would be okay with doing it. (And if Chris does get the business, it'd happen eventually anyway.) It's something Chris almost did ages ago, but had other issues that prevented it in regards to keeping his father sane and alive. There's a lot of family history that makes changing our name seem like something that is bound to happen any way since it hasn't yet, and it's smarter for us to do it now before we have kids than wait 15 years.
So, now that I've rambled on, my question is this:
Does anyone have any good name suggestions for a Baby Lower?

1. Name him lower, but pronounced "low" as in not high
Just to piss people off with two names spelled the same but pronounced differently.

That's what Rabrrrrrr would do.

2. Lower Lower
Edited on Sat Nov-26-05 10:56 AM by cfield
I like that. That could work.

But I don't want my kid to hate me!

Edit to clarify: I don't care if anyone else hates me, but my kid is something different.

Lewis Lower or Laura Lower would be very easy for others to remember. They ring nicely, too.

3. Check out: behindthename.com
It's a great resource for getting names from a wide range of cultures and tradtions, including our own, and has tons of information about the meaning, history and variations of each name.

But if you want my suggestions...(I'm an excellent baby namer)

Female child: Zelda ("heroine")

Male child: Bartholomew ("keeper of the furrows")

Your names are very strong sounding but gentle at the same time. I like that in a name.

10. Excellent! I've been telling people about that site for years.
Edited on Sat Nov-26-05 11:31 AM by BlueIris
Just a tip, because your new surname will have two syllables, apperently experts recommend a three syllable first name, which may increase the musicality of your baby's full name when pronounced aloud (I thought Zelda Lower sounded okay, though).

Other names I think may suit your future offspring include...

Victoria, Odelia, Lenora, Antonia and Ivy

or

Ezekial, Xavier, Alastair, Barnaby and Casper

Unisex names: Tatum and Keagan

7. That's what my husband said
I'm not fond of it.
But, I like uncommon names, ones you don't hear everyday.

I was going to use Rilyn Gabrielle with Field, but I hate Rilyn Lower. I think we'll still use Gabrielle for a girl, but I'm terrible with finding boy names I like.

21. One suggestion.
Edited on Sat Nov-26-05 01:26 PM by Gormy Cuss
Since Lower will be mispronounced frequently when read, and misspelled frequently when heard, give consideration to first names that are less likely to suffer either fate.

This I know from experience. I never have to spell my last name but my first name has two common spellings and a seemingly endless list of variations. In elementary school when we exchanged valentines in class I got used to accepting any one addressed with a set of letters that had some phonetic resemblance to my first name.

And don't let me start on my middle name --oy.

:D

but I want them to know that I put effort into picking a unique name just for him/her. I want something he/she can be proud of.

28. It can be unique...
If no one has ever heard of it they'll be forced to ask how to spell it. It's the multiple choice names like Steven/Stephen or Caitlin/Katelyn that are more trouble.

9. In my family middle names are patronymic for the oldest son and...
the name of an ancestor for other sons.

My father's middle name is his father's first name.
My brother's middle name is dad's first name.
My middle name is my great-great-grandfather's first name.

It's a fun system

22. "Ed" or "Joe" not good enough?
So many people have named their kids "unusual names" that those "unusual" names aren't so unusual anymore. In fact, they're pretty much the norm now.

Why not be a rebel and name your kid "Steve" or, if a girl, "Michelle?"

26. I'm trying to break away from the
unusual names that have become common. Like Aiden or Micayla.

Steve and Michelle may not be common for infants now, but they're very common for people my parents' age or younger so I'd like something other than names like that.

Sure my tastes may be bizarre to you, but that doesn't make them bad.

34. One could always give thier child a conventional first name
and a more unusual middle. That's what I did with LeftyKid. He can go by his very boring and professional first name when he's older or continue to answer to his middle name, which is uncommon but not odd or anything.

37. Grandpa is Charles
and goes by Chuck. Grandma is Pam.

I've got a cousin Pam so I'd probably avoid that. And neither of us are big fans of Charles.
I like LeftyMom's idea of a simple first name and a fun middle name. I'm planning to use Gabrielle for a middle name for a girl, and will call her Gabri. I just need a good boys name! My husband and I have been debating on different names all weekend; I think he's getting tired of it since he doesn't like the idea of having a little one for another year. I never get tired of trying out different combos!
