Nighthawks 42
Sorry I'm late, my darling Nighthawks. I've a small (but non-lethal) case of "I miss my Mama." :( But I had a beautiful and curative PM this morning from one of my dearest DU girlfriends, and I'm feeling better.

Love, hugs and protection to you all. Let the Bawk, Bawk, Bawking begin! :bounce:

5. Hiya, MissHoneychurch!
 Yes, I talked with my mom, as well as my two-year-old nephew. It made me miss them more, but that's OK. It was lovely to hear my Mama's voice. :loveya:

How're you, gf? Happy it's Friday? I know I'm glad to see Friday this week.

8. Yeah I am happy the week is over
even though it went by fast.

Oh yes it is good to hear Mama's voice if one is far away. You know there is always one you can depend on no matter what.

Did Ginger get some turkey yesterday? Or did CMW eat all?

Does Germany have anything like Thanksgiving? (Sorry for the stupid question.)

such a cat (sorry ... god) has to be spoiled and nothing less.

November 11th, the Martinsday, (and here I thought it was begin of December) is a day where you have goose (Martinsgans). It is a religious holiday, so don't ask me about the origins. It isn't as popular as Thanksgiving. But every so often we have a Martinsgans.

This is one of my favorite protest poems.

ANY SYSTEM
From The Energy of Slaves,
Copyright 1975, by Leonard Cohen

Any system you contrive without us
will be brought down
We warned you before
and nothing that you built has stood
Hear it as you lean over your blueprint
Hear it as you roll up your sleeve
Hear it once again
Any system you contrive without us
will be brought down

You have your drugs
You have your guns
You have your Pyramids your Pentagons
With all your grass and bullets
you cannot hunt us any more
All that we disclose of ourselves forever
is this warning
Nothing that you built has stood
Any system you contrive without us
will be brought down.

33. "A testament to love"
That's exactly what I took from your earlier words. Being a mother to a bright and independent daughter can be incredibly rewarding and terribly frustrating - and that's just within a span of 10 minutes in any given day! Your words really inspired me - I hope my daughter feels the same way you do about your mom in the years to come. I also hope like hell my daughter grows up to be as smart, funny and compassionate as you, my friend!

26. Hello Heidi
I just finished my 2000 stair steps, plus I took my dog for a long walk along the bayou today.

I needed to I ate way to much food.

I ate at home and then went to vist a neighbor and ate there.

I couldn't take another Thanksgiving soon.

44. This bayou has cement walls but still lots of wildlife.
Lots of little fish jumping, and some ducks flying low looking for dinner. The bats came and were flying around, a nice day.

We do have a bayou that is natural but one needs a canoe for travel.

Good fun fishing, wildlife and alligators, travel down this bayou and one would never know a city was there.

81. We did somewhat the same thing. I lived across the street from a
railroad yard and woods, the things we used to do.

How we lived to be adults I will never know.

One time we climbed in a railroad car and the whole train started moving and we couldn't get off until about 10 miles away.

We had to walk home really fast before dark, our mothers never knew about this.

We used to jump off swings in the park after we got the swings very high, we would dare each other to go higher.

Stupid things kids do.

160. May already have crossed that line
a long time ago.

But am working on not going there again.

Halloween-before-last, I was getting my Halloween show ready. Lots of spooky sound effects, readings from Poe, theramin music, the usual. A fun night in store.

Then I read the release from Johns-Hopkins in the Lancet that outlined our abject slaughter of 100,00 Iraqi civilians. I was as mean and nasty and hateful that night as I have ever been. It all poured out. I wound up suggesting that all Bush voters get a tattoo or wear a bracelet or something so that after the next revenge attack (read: terr'ist attack) we could leave *their* corpses out in the sun to rot Antigone-style.

And it *was* mean. And I meant it to be. Still not sure if I'm sorry.

I understand completely, my friend. I just wonder how long it will be before our country has to be liberated by outside rescuers? I'm 42 years old, and about six months ago, I caclulated how many US military interventions had been conducted since my birth. It was more than 50, if I recall. That's sad and wrong.

165. I'm Forty-two, too . . . Forty-tutu?
My Dad (he's 81) and I were talking about the very thing. He told me his childhood was mostly a matter of poverty (of which he was largely unaware, since everyone in the Depression was poor) but of no real fears of being destroyed on any given day.

He's glad we used the Bomb on the "Japs" (won't challenge his racism, at least not often, since they made frequent, institutionalized attempts on his life for 2 1/2 years), but he felt like he knew as much fear in the 60 years after the war as during 2 1/2 in it.

Fact is, Heidi, we grew up with terror for breakfast, lunch and supper, did our generation at the butt-end of the baby boomers. On my end, I got to hear full-grown adults screaming "Nigger" at my six-year-old classmates as we left school. I got to see them cry. And I walked them home to my neighborhood, where all the other white people were moving away because they'd moved in.

And I still shake just thinking about it.

Our generation is also the first NEVER to know an American government we've felt we could trust, even a little bit.

We sort of owe it to the ones behind us to fix things, or at least try.

167. I absolutely agree with you.
But there definitely are some generational differences between our parents. For example, my father is 61, a Vietnam veteran with two master's degrees, and his ill will is toward the US government that got us into Vietnam (and, in fact, escalated the conflict rather) than toward the North or South Vietnamese.

I never witnessed overt racism as a child, but my mother (a quarter Cherokee) suffered racist taunts as a child even though she grew up in a state with a very high American Indian population. Knowing how our mother was treated as a child no doubt had a huge impact on the human beings we, her kids, became.

You're right, too, about ours being the first _American_ generation that has never known a trustworthy US government. But I think other nations have, for very good reason, mistrusted our government for quite a long time.

I'm very, very glad you're here, GrpCaptMandrake. :pals:

stiff in his grave before we started snickering up our lace cuffs about his goofy notion that we "avoid foreign entanglements."

There was a contingent within the Independence movement that wanted nothing more than to *engage* in foreign entanglements. Sadly, Jefferson may have been, probably was, one of those. You can't keep a good man down.

I've been reading the Aubrey/Maturin series of novels by Patrick O'Brian about the Napoleonic era, and, being written by someone well-informed in British naval history, it presents a fascinating picture, albeit in miniscule, of a continental view of the nascent U.S. It isn't flattering, save in its descriptions of our ability, even then, to wreck, break and destroy things, even if the things we were trying to wreck, break and destroy were the shackles we'd thrown off less than a half-century before. We should remember that both Adams and Jefferson lived through the War of 1812.

Meanwhile, I have made some progress. I can get Dad all the way through an episode of "Iron Chef" w/o him muttering "Shoulda killed 'em all."

Me, I'm troubled by "43." I generally don't like sharing *anything* in common w/ GWB, even a number. Thinking about skipping straight to 44, like somebuildings were made w/o 13th floors.

Will stop babbling now.

Edit for capitalization.

The Americas are one great big eugenics experiment, even before we knew the word. Sadly, by killing off so many natives, we may have doomed ourselves.

177. Thanks, CMW!
I love the movie and the character. In the photo, I think he's saying "Oh, hell. Is it the Russians, Sir?"

We use a lot of audio liners from the movie in the show.

126. Non-productive; could get nothing done
For example, even when we went to see Harry Potter, I called the theater first and they said it was half full. So we got there ten minutes later and they said it was sold out. It was a proverbial "one of those days" and nothing was going right. Another example, I hit a store or two around 10:00AM and the things I wanted were sold out. Walked out of the stores empty-handed. Well, at least I didn't get in an accident as people were driving crazily. It was almost funny in a way how things were going, except at the time it wasn't funny, especially when I was riding around looking for a parking spot for about 20 minutes.

Was your day similar?

It is good you don't stay sad for a long time.

My favorite bartender spelled my name in the Guiness foam the other night. I was charmed!

I also chase yarn if it's dangled in front of me. I'm easily intrigued.

One of the four. And when he "skids" he looks up at me for me to say "good boy" and for approval.

Until I looked at your personal info about 2 minutes ago, do you know I didn't know you were not in the USA? That explains a few things like you miss your family.

Have you been there a long time? I was there once in winter, Lake Lugano and Zurich. Lugano was wonderful and warm and we went north over the mountains from Italy and it just got bitterly cold, almost as biting cold as northern IL

further north. On that trip we started in Rome, then Florence, then Milan and it was getting chillier and chillier going north. Zurich was about zero farhenheit and windy. I couldn't wait to get out of there. Might as well have stayed in Chicago. Yes I remember how cold Milan was in late December, brrr. But then again it got up to 17 F here yesterday

Four years is a long time...I get the picture (I think)

Truly, I prefer living in this warmer part of the country, but nothing on earth beats Christmas shopping on Zurich's Bahnhoffstrasse.

I speak survival Italian. My Spanish, German and Swiss-German are much better than my Italian, but I consider myself fluent only in English. Call Me Wesley is the language guy in our family.
