We just got burglarized
While I was sitting here goofing off on DU and bemoaning my retarded thanksgiving, someone opened my bedroom window and made off with my brand new laptop.

Had it two days.

Haven't even turned it on yet.

How lame is that?

:wtf:

And BTW, if you're putting off cleaning your house, it looks that much messier full of cops.

Also, keep your windows locked and don't keep expensive goodies within arm's reach of the window.

But, on the bright side, they didn't take the cell phone (which was sitting on the floor under the laptop) or any of the other myriad goodies that our house contains.

They came in while you were in the house? Yikes!

Glad it was someone after electronics and not worse, you know?

5. Yeah, that's the freaky part
I was going about my dorky business totally unawares.

And the stupid dog was utterly useless. Give her a MilkBone and she's dead to the world.

The dog barks at the slightest provocation (someone walking by acrss the street, the cat, hunger, boredom), but when there's a burglar? No.

Got homeowners or renters insurance? Those would cover the loss of the laptop.

Were you alone in the house? :scared:

53. You're very lucky
that your dog isn't like my cats were. I swear they would have shown a burglar where the "good" silver was for a Temptations cat treat and a cuddle. But on a more serious note, you were very lucky. After all, it is only stuff. You, on the other hand, are unique and precious and cannot be replaced.

29. I had a similar thing happen..
I had just painted my room. So that night we slept with my window and door open. The only things in my room were a boom box and the mattress that my girlfriend and I were sleeping on.

About 4 am someone tried to crawl in my window. Luckily my roommate heard the guy coming in and scared him away.

so probably the window wasn't fastened securely.

I feel so dumb.

Like, it could not have been any easier to steal. :dunce:

9. And one of the most retarded parts
is that when we were leaving the house to go to sacramento (yes, we were gone 8+ hours today when they could have TOTALLY cleaned us out) my mom made a big stink about making sure the doors were locked because "thanksgiving is a really big day for burglaries" and then at dinner we spent half the time discussing lurid tales of home invasion robberies.

Then we get home to find the house safe and sound, and whaddya know?

12. Your doggie sounds like ours. Except she did catch a would-be burgler
in our old shed (before we tore it down and put up and new one) one day in the back, they guy was scared spitless. Even our 30 lb. dog barking and charging back and forth isn't something he wanted to deal with. He jumped the fence and headed down the alley as I cursed at him and made a show of pulling out my cell phone. (There was nothing in the shed of value as I knew the rickety door wouldn't keep anyone out.)

Glad you and your family are safe, property can always be replaced. People and pets can't.

18.  I would like to think that they are poor and desperate. But I suspect
most of them are too lazy to get up and slog to work every day like the rest of us.

I have the feeling the guy my dog cornered was an illegal (and I have no proof of that) prowling around alleys looking for stuff (like tools or garden equipment) he could pawn quickly.

22. There are a lot of meth addicts around here
and other poor white folks.

The woman across the street had the window of her car smashed and her purse stolen, and she told the cops she saw two people walking down the street earlier tonight that looked just like the people who stole her purse... and were stupid enough to try to use the card at a place that had a video camera. :eyes:

24. Yep, I'm sure addicts are a prime cause for burglaries. Which is one of
the reasons I believe we should just let them have the stuff and treat it as a medical condition.

28. I realize that that idea has some pretty negative sides. And you are
right about the penal system. We don't do much to rehabilitate anymore, it's more about locking people up and then turning them loose with worse problems than they went in with.

Also, if there were jobs available, that actually paid decent wages, there would be a lot less crime. Drugs are coping mechanisms (escape from a dead-end life) that quickly get out of control.

more affluent people are more likely to be shunted towards treatment the first time they get in trouble, instead of the revolving door of drug use, crime, jail, unemployability, drug use, crime...

wasn't so much the part at the end where she snapped, but the fact that she was totally uninterested in anything the other family had to share. The point of the show isn't the money, it's learning from others, and if she wasn't willing to do that, then why even bother?

36. any neighbors see you carrying your new laptop?
We had a neighbor who's oldest kid broke into the neighbor's homes whenever he saw their new electronic gadgets when visiting with his friends. When the cops finally caught him and searched his room they found 5 laptops, 16 mp3 players, a portable DVD player and 4 digital cameras. This kid stole just for kicks and a perverse sense of depriving people of their belongings. Now he's being deprived of his freedom.

they wouldn't take fingerprints

crime lab costs $$$

all that stuff on csi:city of the week is bullshit, they don't take fingerprints & spend the money for nonviolent crime, they can't justify it in the budget

and that does include a home invasion, at least ours was

even the cops were a little shocked the lab didn't take the prints

If the purchase was paid for by you may have a recovery insurance coverage. "If it's lost or stolen within the first 30 days". Some credit card companies were offering that fringe benefit at no charge to the card holder.
