christmas gift for the woman who has everything?
help, need reasonably priced gift ideas for the older woman who has everything, including condo decorated to the nines and lots of domestic and internat'l travel

would like to budget under $50, we don't do over-the-top gifts that put people on the spot but i would spend more for the right gift

gift must be ship-pable

suggestions?

anyone?

no perfumes or smellies!

3. I have someone a bit like that on my list this year too
It's tough to buy something for someone who has way more money than I do. Mine's also artsy to boot, so making something cool is out since I could never do anything as cool as she does.

like Kerouac? "The Dharma Bums," perhaps?

;)

Happy Thanksgiving.

20. Read maybe, but not owns. So a nice edition would be good, IMO.
For instance, for a long time I didn't actually *own* any complete Shakespeare sets/books. My mom finally got me one, with gold leaf pagey things, really beautiful. But since then I've gotten individual plays with commentary/legend/whatever, my brain is fried today. Like all of them.

I wish someone would get me a nice copy of The Picture of Dorian Gray. :(

9. A nice portrait of you and yours...
Doesn't need to be expensive, but a medium sized family portrait in a simple frame would probably be a big hit, and you can use it for other friends and family, too, especially if you're sending Christmas* cards.

*This does not constitute an endorsement of Christmas cards, or Christian faiths, nor is it a denial of other faiths, beliefs, or non-beliefs. Chick tracts and Flying Spaghetti Monster sold separately. Do not taunt Happy Fun Ball. :hide:

11. Get her something that will be used up and that she doesn't need to store
Like a couple bottles of wine, armagnac, or scotch.

Or a box of chocolates.

Or a bouquet a month for a couple months.

Something that will make her say "How thoughtful!" and then, whenever she uses it, will make her remember you, but also keep her from saying, "Where am I gonna store this goddamn thing?"

18. Yeah, that's the right idea: something edible that can be used up
during the holidays, when she is entertaining various guests.

Check out this link for OUTSTANDING cookies. It's a biz here in Santa Cruz and lucky for you, they ship cookies anywhere......

Have fun and happy holidays!

12. think about what she likes
especially in terms of food or books which are things most people can always put to use.

A fall back position might be to send flowers -- most arrangements don't qualify as smellies and they're a nice surprise for people who have all the 'stuff' they really want because it's a gift that doesn't need to take up permanent space, yet it can be a cheery touch for the holidays.

If she's a green thumb type, a bunch of bulbs for forcing might be appreciated. Many gardening catalogs offer these in pretty containers. Amaryllis are gorgeous and not strongly scented (avoid paper white daffodils because they tend to have quite a smell.)

27. Paper whites!
OMG! My cousin and his wife sent those to my grandmother one year. They were the most hideous things I have ever smelt. It he only thing that made a flower a flower was the scent...these things would not qualify as flowers. They smell like roadkill! x(

Eau de Funeral Parlor. It's a shame because they're very reliable and pretty.

28. You would be suprised
I get mom's in here with their daughters all the time, people buying stuff for their (adult) kids, etc.

The variation in attitudes even among my customers is amazing.
From the very nervous and uptight, to the want to customers that want to gab about every product in the store and see them tested.

Couples and groups and families with married kids -- it's a trip sometimes. Sex doesn't seem to be as big of taboo especially in the lower classes.
