1. Rush, Pink Floyd, Zappa, Coltrane, Zeppelin, Yes, Philip Glass,
Steve Reich, Arvo Part, Terry Riley, Kronos Quartet, Yo-Yo Ma, Stockhausen, Crumb, Black Sabbath

There are so few rock bands that I care about any more, I can't think of any to list except either dead ones, or ones who aren't making albums any more, except Sabbath.

Sad.

26. Doubts
I'm beginning to become disappointed in the state of music. I thought "God Hates Us All" was ok but not great. Then some other bands that I was interested in (Meshuggah, With Honor, Arch Enemy) put out some not so good music. NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

33. It's hard to maintain that super high level for more than five albums.
They were good enough to do it six in a row. The majority of the songs on the past two albums are very good but on the whole they do not have the full album experience the earlier releases offered, there are too many songs on them. Seven to ten tunes is perfect for a Heavy Metal album. More than that is inviting filler.

20. Iris DeMent, Leonard Cohen (and he NEEDS the money)....
A 'devastated' Leonard Cohen

The Canadian music icon is broke and the lawsuits are flying. It's a sordid tale involving allegations of extortion, SWAT teams, forcible confinement, tax troubles and betrayal.

KATHERINE MACKLEM

I said there's been a flood
I said there's nothing left
-- Leonard Cohen, from The Letters, on his album Dear Heather

Take an iconic artist, mix in missing millions, hints of tantric sex, a lawsuit replete with other salacious details, and a ruptured relationship with a long-time, trusted associate, and you've got the makings of a Hollywood blockbuster. Except in the case of Leonard Cohen, it's a true tale, with the bizarre twist of a Tibetan Buddhist suing a Zen Buddhist, Cohen. For the 70-year-old poet, singer and songwriter, it's a nasty, rapidly escalating legal battle that on the one hand accuses him of conspiracy and extortion, and on the other has him accusing both his highly trusted personal manager and long-time financial adviser -- the Tibetan Buddhist -- of gross mismanagement of his financial affairs. The case exposes not only private details of Cohen's finances, but also a dramatic tale of betrayal.

30. I'd snatch up a new Neutral Milk Hotel album, march straight to
the counter and plunk my money down. I'd do more or less the same for new albums from The Mountain Goats, The Arcade Fire, The Weakerthans, The New Pornographers, and new faves Wolf Parade. Probably for some others too, though I can't think what.

I've noticed lots of Zappa mentions. Do you folk mean if he rose from the grave to lay down some new tracks, or if a previously undiscovered album was released, or either?

34. Sam Phillips
after having mentioned Dar, I think the better answer would be Sam Phillips. I have never heard anything off any of her CDs before I bought them.

The first time I ever heard of her, I was in a music shop looking, and asked someone for something new. They recommended Cruel Inventions; I took it home, put it on and became a fan in 4 notes. Now, whenever I shop, I look to see if she has something new out, and as soon as I see it, I grab it.

Anything else I'd sample first, and possibly just download picemeal unless it was all good.

*I would add Melissa Etheridge, but I can just dub her CDs from my best friend so there's no need to buy them.
