Grandma's Recipes
Edited on Mon Nov-14-05 07:58 PM by Akoto
My grandmother has always been a fanatical baker. The other day, much to my surprise, she gave me all of her recipes.

This might not seem like much, but let my tell you, it was definitely an experience. My grandmother has kept the same exact copies of her recipes, on the same pieces of paper, since decades before I was even born. She hid them and never let anyone else read them, even though she delighted in preparing them for us.

Tonight, I pulled out one of those sheets and prepared her recipe for chocolate pie. Let me tell you, my grandmother never did anything half-assed. She actually called for baking chocolate cookies solely to be crumbled up for the crust. It then has you prepare this chocolate mousse-like filling. Once it's topped with chocolate shavings, it goes into the freezer for a few hours.

Holy cow, was it ever good when I had the first piece. Why are grandmas such good cooks? :loveya:

Do you have any favorite recipes passed down from your grandmother?

1. My Grandmother, Mimi, didn't cook.
My other Grandmother was in a state institution till she died in 1965. I never knew her. You should really consider writing a cookbook with stories of her with each recipe. I envy you.

2. A few years ago, Mr. SG's maternal grandmother put together
three-ring binders for everybody in the family with recepies from the Great-Grandmothers, Grandmothers, Mothers, and anyone else in the family who enjoys cooking. It's really cool, and Mr. SG actually uses it quite a bit.

That is great that your grandmother did!

3. I wish I would have gotten some of her recipes
Between her and my grandfather I don't know who was better at preparing food. They are both gone now and I regret not asking for some of those recipes.

4. OMG, I do remember one.
Put salt in a well seasoned cast iron frying pan, and heat on high. Wait about a minute and lay in a fillet minion. Flip after about 5 minutes, and continue cooking for another 4 minutes. Serve with Stouffer's Corn Souffle and a gin and tonic. That's the meal I ever saw Mimi cook.
