Good bye Busch stadium
We were driving through downtown St. Louis and stopped to watch the demo. What a way to spend a Saturday night. All we had with us were our camera phones.

1. What replaced it?
No doubt a "Cingular Arena" or an "Office Depot Gardens"....

2. The new stadium is being built
on the right side of the pics. It will also be called Bush Memorial Stadium.

34. The new Busch stadium is being built with
taxpayer dollars. Of course the Cardinals played the "we may move if we don't get a taxpayer funded stadium" card and Missouri and St Louis city and county swallowed it hook line and sinker.

3. Let's not forget that Busch
is Anheuser-Busch, Inc. So the original stadium had a corporate name from its opening in 1966. Same with Wrigley Field, which opened in 1914.

It could be argued, though, that both stadia were named for their owners and not their owners' corporations.

5. True
When Bush bought the Cards, they renamed Sportsman's Park to Bush. The new one will be the third.

4. I am kind of sad to see it go!

Is the new Busch going to be one of those cookie cutter new style baseball stadiums? :puke:

6. I guess you could say that.
Edited on Sat Nov-12-05 11:02 PM by pintobean
The old one was a 60's cookie cutter with arches on top. I think the new parks have a lot more character, but the old one had so many memories.

Edit: I'm sad too.

20. I just learned last year that Busch Stadium was designed after a
beer bottle cap! when someone said that i slapped my forehead in a BFO (blinding flash of the obvious)!

I will miss the stadium terribly... Here it is the night before the wrecking ball hit.

Looks like you and I stood in the same spot for our pics! heheh

7. Have a look
I can't link this directly, but go here: http://www.ballparks.com/baseball/index.htm

...then click "National" at upper left, then "Future," then "Busch Stadium."

10. Wow thanks for the link!
That is really cool.

The new Busch actually does not look too bad...:)

I bookmarked that site.

I have a collection of miniature ball parks...I have Ebbets Field, Yankee Stadium, The old Tiger Stadium, Wrigley Field, and the old Metropolitan Stadium (former home of the Twins).

18. I love your city.
I visited this summer and had a blast. I went to a Cards-Cubs game, saw the arch, had some concrete and left my AMEX at a gas station. It was awesome.

19. It makes me sad, like a piece of my childhood is being torn down.
Couldn't they have dumped the money they are using to build a new stadium into renovating the old? I have such good memories of Busch Stadium. My grandfather worked there for many decades.

35. They could have but the owners of the Cardinals wanted
more luxery boxes. The new Busch stadium will seat fewer people than the one being torn down. At first tickets wont go up all that much but over time they will.

21. As a Red Sox fan...
...it just seems ironic that, barely a year after we finally win it all, they demolish the stadium where it happened. :-(
