1. Because they're focusing almost exclusively on Johnny/June relationship
Script had to clear the family's approval as well.
Besides, given that horror fims and teenage sex romps consistently get PG-13 clearance nowadays I don't see how this specific focus on Cash's life story necessary requires an "R" rating anyway.
2. Beats me. The same goes for Loretta and Tammy movies, too.
Loretta Lynn was a hard core honky tonker back in the day. She used to play seedy clubs in Ft. Worth and her kids would sit on the bar while she sang. (or so my dad used to say...)
While we're on the subject, why do actors always get nominated for (and sometimes actually win) major awards for country western roles? I just don't get it-- unless they get extra points for risking looking like fools.
Joaquin Phoenix seems to be channeling Johnny Cash himself - an actor who can completely step into the role of another person and BECOME that person so convincingly deserves Oscar buzz. I don't see what it has to do with being a "country western role."
Just askin' why they felt they had to tame it down....
These people's lives are clear cut examples of what heppens when you are raised in poverty and debachement and yet are treated to a full day of attonment and god each and every week...
It's that sinner savior thing that gives the music such a rich undertone....
Well, the good stuff, not shania hill or Kenny McGraw....
