So I just spent the entire weekend uploading my CDs to my computer
Got myself a nice little sound system setup. I have about 700 songs uploaded (due to space restraints I would upload the songs that I like - I do have about 300 CDs and only a 12gig HD).

Found a few more songs through Limeware.

I've got myself a kickass jukebox working now!!

3. Well, I'm also going to get a new MP3 player
that way I can transfer them back and forth. I'm thinking of getting a Sony since I've uploaded everything to Connect software (which I use for my Sony MD player)

4. Invest in a bigger hard drive, you'll thank yourself...
I have two hard drives, 120gb and 200gb. The 200gb drive is dedicated to music and movies and the like. It's great.

6. stupid question...
if you've ordered a better sound card, is it better to wait until you've had it installed to download? (Do you get better sound output when downloading with an upgraded sound card?) I ask this because I've ordered a sound card and speakers out of my recent enthusiasm in successfully downloading with itunes; I'm so glad that I figured it out but part of me is anxious thinking that I'll have to redo it in order to get a more sensitive musical nuance with an improved sound card. I've really been fretting over this question. Also, when I ordered sound card and speakers, I assumed that they would just naturally fit in my computer. Now, I don't know if I should have checked that somehow.

sound card is creative...does anyone know if these things are designed to fit most computers?

8. I have absolutely no idea
I would assume that the card is only going to affect the output of the sound - ie the quality of the music that is played on the system.

I have an ok soundcard and decent speakers but then again I was never one to go nuts over this stuff.

14. thx I'm pretty dumb about this stuff...
I was just wondering if I would have to download all the cd's again with an improved sound card. I kinda think it's a matter of if the computer downloads all the info and the sound card "interpets" it after...or if an improved sound card allows for more/better input-sound quality (that it already has the data but can't express it without a better sound card).

I've been downloading my cd's this weekend, too, and didn't think about it until I ordered a better sound card. I guess when I get the improved sound card put-in I'll do a comparison to see if it affects sound quality. I wish I had more understanding of how this works.

Congratulations on downloading your cd's...it's a lot of work. I've really been enjoying listening to some more music after down-loading my cd's.

9. Yes,
Your sound quality greatly improves with a good sound card and quality speakers. Currently I am running an Audigy II with Klipsch speakers and subwoofer. The investment in sound put at about $500.00, small when you consider the total cost of my system and the enjoyment from listening to my music.

What type of Creative card did you buy, Audigy, Audigy II, SoundBlaster? If you bought one of the more recent cards you will need a free PCI slot on your motherboard. What motherboard do you have?

12. Download as much as you want..
Changing the sound card won't affect your download. If you download from iTunes you get a 128k AAC (advanced audio coding) file. It doesn't check your hardware first. Everyone gets the same thing.

10. Only 12 gig? I just bought a new 200G for 80-something at Staples

I remember when I was happy with 88K floppies... sheesh, times have changed.

Edit: Didn't mean to go off topic, just thinking that at that price, you might consider adding a new one :)

15. slightly off topic but related question - does anybody know how
to record from other media to the computer? (tapes, lps etc) or do I have to put them on cd first? - was hoping to use the computer to MAKE the cd's.
