Staff Report

ZANESVILLE - Is it against the law to keep a fetus in your freezer?

Muskingum County officials don't seem to think so. Nevertheless, sheriff's deputies removed one from a Zanesville home Tuesday night after getting a call about it.

A man living in the 10000 block of West Pike wanted to know "how much trouble he can get in" for having a six-week-old fetus in the house, according to sheriff's records released Wednesday.
Lt. Steve Welker said a couple in the home was arguing and getting ready to separate when the man called deputies.

The woman told deputies she was storing the fetus as evidence in a possible malpractice suit against a Georgia hospital.

Well, this woman may not have had a case against the hospital but she probably has a case against the sheriff - since when do you confiscate something you think "might be illegal"? If it was oregano being confiscated as marijuana, that would be different. If you don't know if a crime has been committed, you call your commander, you look it up. You don't confiscate first and ask questions later.
