I watched "Pride and Prejudice" the other day
Edited on Fri Nov-04-05 04:02 AM by MissHoneychurch
it was a nice movie, they had some good ideas and Matthew MacFadyen kinda grew on me during the movie.

But the BBC mini serie is still the best adaption. Nothing comes over Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy.

1. I haven't read the book or seen any video adaptation.
Is the story good? Worth reading?

2. worth reading for sure
it is a romantic story. When I first read it, I fell in love with the characters. The BBC mini serie is a better adaption, very close to the book since they have more time than the adaption with Keira Knightley and Matthew MacFadyen.

The book by Jane Austen is a classic.

5. For sure
Two other books that I really want to read: The Catcher in the Rye and The Da Vinci Code. I read Angels and Demons (prequel to Da Vince Code) and absolutely LOVED it.

10. This time I am confused myself
some months ago after the Boston meetup we had that topic already and it was worse back then than it is now. Guess I missed out on a lot of what is going on this time (since I am on the other side of the ocean) but sometimes it is a blessing. The hormons run wild in between but mostly we have a lot of fun together.

15. I've been reading a lot of Fantasy books lately.
I don't know if you like fantasy books but Rober Jordan's series A Wheel of Time is pretty good. I'm also reading George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire saga. I like A Song of Ice and Fire much more than Wheel of Time but they are both good if you like fantasy. What about you?

17. Do you like funny fantasy??
then you should out Terry Pratchett. One of my favorite authors.

I enjoy reading mysteries, Ian Rankin, Henning Mankell and Kathy Reichs are on the top of my list there.

Right now I am reading a book about the early history of Manhattan and NYC, when it was a colony of the Netherlands in the 17th century.
Next book I will read will be a book about German woman who fought for their Jewish men in th 1940s. Robeson told me about it, I bought it already.

I am studying Biochemistry planning on either going to Med. School or becoming a high school teacher. I know, complete end's of the spectrum. Right now I have exams coming up so I'm trying to study so I can pass them. The shitty part is that my three most difficult exams are on monday and tuesday next week. I have an Organic Chemistry and Calculus exam on monday and Biology on tues. I really have only two things to look forward to: the Madison football game on sat. and the night of drinking on tuesday.

70. I'm reading the 11 Jordan book right now
and it's actually pretty fast paced. I agree that his books got pretty bad after book 5 but this one is really good so far.

I also can't wait for Martin's next book to come out, he is an amazing writer.

Wicked? As in the book that was made into a Musical? I haven't read the book or seen the musical yet but I've been told they are both amazing. If the quality of the music is any indication of the whole musical then by what I've heard it is good.

one paragraph one is a winner.
Yes it is the basis of the musical, and now there is a sequel "Son of a Witch"
This author has also written a couple of other novelizations of famous fairy tale characters..one I remember is about the Wicked Queen in "Snow White" and I thing the other one is Red Riding Hood.

31. I did not care for it
partly because of my confusion. I thought Lea Thompson was in it, but it was Emma Thompson. I guess now I need to watch it to see my man Alan (Snape) Rickman, otherwise known as the Metatron - the voice of God who says "by Grabthar's hammer, you shall be avenged!"

My niece needs to watch it since she is not very sensible. My house will not work. For one thing, it is a mess, although it has gotten much better. For another, I do not have a big screen TV with surround sound like. Finally, as a single guy I do not own a couch. Really I only have one easy chair which is all I need 99.996% of the time. Plus I have the chair that my sister gave me

27. I love the BBC version; skeptical of the new version.
Why turn everyone into skinny little things? I suspect BBC Jane and Elizabeth were much more ideal than Keira Knightly. (who I can't really buy as smart, witty Elizabeth. maybe she could be whiny pirate-fighting Elizabeth :)).

I've watched a few versions of Pride and Prejudice. The 1990s version is by far the best. Everyone fits their character and it's so funny. I especially enjoyed Mr. Colins, Miss Bingley, and Lady Catherine.

Don't get me started on Colin Firth. :)

46. The BBC version is still the best
Colin Firth is deadly sexy and whoever the actress is that plays Eliza is wonderful. Her eyes are amazing (which is one of the things Darcy first notices and is enthralled by).

There is an earlier BBC version, not quite so good, adapted by Fay Weldon (a brilliant writer in her own right and a major fan of Jane). But the acting and direction are slightly off.

Still, the best version is the original book.

Khash, major Janeite.

53. Have you read the stuff she wrote
when she was a teenager? "A History of England" or "Love and Freindship" or "Lady Susan"? Hysterically funny. Or her letters to her sister Cassandra - one of meanest and funniest things I've ever read was when a neighbour had a miscarriage and the doctor said it was due to fright. And Jane says "She must have looked at her husband".

When I was in college getting my psych degree a prof threw a copy of "Emma" on to his desk and said "Read it. That's all I have to teach you," He was right.

If you love Jane, I highly recommend Fay Weldon's "Letters To Alice on First Reading Jane Austen"

Khash.
(Don't get me started on Jane - I can go on for days)

50. It's a nice circle in a way
The writer of Bridget Jones Diary used the name Mr. Darcy as her love interest, then they were able to get Colin Firth (BBC's Pride and Prejudice star)to play him in the Bridget Jones movie...now the same producers of Bridget Jones are doing Pride and Prejudice which brought Firth/Darcy to prominence.

I watch the BBC/A&E one every time it's on.

and I agree with you. It was better than I thought it would be but still doesn't hold a candle to the BBC/A&E version. NO one is better than Colin Firth, IMO.

The director was at the screening I attended and he said he has never seen any of the other versions because he didn't want to be influenced by any of them. He also said the one actor he would most like to work with is Denzel Washington.

59. Have you seen "Bride and Prejudice"?
It's a Bollywood version from last year, directed by the great British hope Gurinder Chadha (who made a wee name for herself in America with Bend it Like Beckham). I haven't (& I'm not especially an Austen fan), but it got well reviewed over here & is out on DVD in the US:

74. Why can't Keira Knightley act? Why does she look just like Natalie Portman
?
Why does she continue to get acting roles?

???

I'm kind of interested in the new version...but Keira makes me not want to. At all. In the trailers..,in the stills...it looks like she just isn't into it or something.

Ah well, there's always Colin Firth's version. :loveya:

75. I don't think I can watch anyone but Colin Firth
as Darcy. Just don't seem right for some reason.
