Need some opinions - How much time do you spend with co-workers
outside work. We have gotten a new supervisor who wants us to go bowling, picnics and such on Sundays. Do you all know if this can be required of staff? Thanks.

1. I work with these people,
I don't socialize with them.

If it were a work related social activity, that would be something entirely different.

But - just for the hell of it; to ruin your weekend --- Hell NO!!

Give the boss a "compromise the objectivity required to maintain a professional atmosphere in the workplace...." spiel.

When you start to socialize, you get cliques, gossip....it's not worth it...

2. I agree. "togetherness breeds contempt"
Weekends are short enough.

Thanks for your response.

5. Every Sunday?
Or just now and then?

And the company's picking up the entire tab, I hope.

22. Once a quarter is four times a year.
I think that's pretty reasonable.

Of course, I LIKE all of my coworkers, so I don't mind.

7. If They're Not Paying, I'm Not Going
The only reason I spent time with my coworkers was because I was PAID to. I never spent any unpaid time off with those people, especially the bosses. I have friends and family to spend my unpaid time off with.

Geesh, stuff like that makes me so mad. I'm so happy to be retired!

12. Thats the way I feel
It's not that I don't like these people, but just not who I choose to hang out with.

8. Kinda depends
I've made friends with co-workers and spent a lot of time with them. But that was friendship - not required and not some idiot's idea of team building.

On the other hand I also (in another job) was required to spend every Saturday evening with them (unpaid) and since I refused (it was really the only time my boyfriend and I had time alone) I lost my job.

Khash.

10. Socializing outside work is one of the worst things you can do!
ESPECIALLY if you are a manager or supervisor. DON'T do it.

11. Once in 5 years
We don't and we won't ever require employees to spend time together after work. I would not agree to be forced into anything after hours unless I wanted to.

15. Last time I had a workplace
outside my home office, we socialized a lot — because we wanted to. We genuinely liked each other, and some of us still get together once a month or so.

Any supervisor who tries to mandate socializing went to the wrong business seminars.

I don't hate them or anything, I just have other things to do and other people to hang out with.

18. It sounds like an added work day to me.
Ask this supervisor how you will be able to attend church services and have your traditional Sunday supper with your family?
Ask this supervisor how you will be able to fit this into your weekend as you are a nudist and will not wear any clothing on any weekend.
Tell the supervisor you can only bowl on Friday afternoons.

It sounds as if the people imposed upon will have to make a stand and educate this person. Never mix business and pleasure. Ever.

BTW- I will not associate with any co-workers outside the confines of the building.

24. If it's not that often, then go
You could alway make up an excuse and not go, but it will probably help you to participate. I hate semi-forced "fun" work outings. However, I never miss them. Bottom line is that your new supervisor will like you better if you attend which translates into better reviews and relaxed rules.
