Why can't I talk to people?
Edited on Fri Oct-28-05 11:10 PM by HypnoToad
I'd gone to the bar and it was very busy. But it should have dawned on me that the guy I locked eyes with was just as much interested in me as I was in him.

Grr.

If I see him tomorrow I'll remind myself I'm mortal (which I need to do more often) and introduce myself, no matter how idiotic I come across. I've alwayts been a social feeb and I haven't much of a choice anymore anyway!

Then I cam come back here and whine and cry about how much a social loser I am! (even my counselor asked me "What keeps you going?!", but that's half-irrelevant... but half-relevant...)

Mind you, when going to parties composed solely of people I know WELL, I'm still a clam whose opening had been superglued shut...

8. He did touch my arm as I walked by and said "Hi!", but I got too nervous.
I wanted to, amongst other things, say "Hi!" back...

It's not mere social anxiety either. Not when I can be in a social situation with people I know extremely well and be just as scared.

12. Maybe you should just text message people in the bar...
...you don't seem to have much trouble with written communication (28,000+ post in 2 years).

Come mon'! Get with the program! It's the 21st Century! We don't need no Stinking verbal communications anymore!
That's so 1990's.

13. I can't talk to people either.
In fact, I'm probably the most socially inept person you'll ever meet.

16. I find the way to meet people
Is to go about your life doing things you have passion for. If its something you can do with others all the better. Then while you are sitting there doing something you like to do you are likely to meet someone else that likes doing it to.

Thats how I found an anime loving, atheist, UU, scary movie fan, foreign film watching, goofball, geek loving woman to spend my life with.

The best way to find a companion is to not look for one.

17. Just talk to people, my friend. You're going to know, in the first five
seconds, whether or not this is a kindred spirit. And if it's not, no loss. I know it's tough, but my Dad toughened me. I was a shy kid, but he used to take me everywhere with him, then abandon me, to talk business, saying "make a friend..." I learned, and am actually grateful for it, since I now think I can talk to almost everyone. It's not hard, as long as you're a good listener. Current events are good, job or family complaints, and pets, if they have them. Those are topics that are guaranteed to make anyone talk a blue streak, and ones you can comment on... Good luck, my friend. You're far more interesting than you think you are.:D

18. You're a great talker Hyno Toad, with good posts. You'll be alright....
...and don't sweat the Psych./Counselor thing. That person may simply be trying to figure out your motivations, and thought that question may have given them some insight. Keep truckin'.
