George Takei reveals he's gay
Saturday, October 29, 2005 at 07:35 JST

LOS ANGELES — George Takei, known to "Strak Fans" as helmsman Mr Sulu, has revealed that he is a homosexual in the current issue of Frontiers, a biweekly Los Angeles magazine covering the gay and lesbian community.

Takei said that his new onstage role as psychologist Martin Dysart in "Equus," helped inspire him to publicly discuss his sexuality. The current social and political climate also motivated Takei's disclosure, he said.

"The world has changed from when I was a young teen feeling ashamed for being gay," Takei told the Assocuated Press on Thursday. "The issue of gay marriage is now a political issue. That would have been unthinkable when I was young."

1. he's the same actor I've always respected and loved
as my reaction would be with any friend coming out of the closet, he's the same person I've always admired...I'm happy he is proud to share this part of his life with everyone now.

I guess he thought it would affect his life.

6. Oh, my....
It's kind of an open secret among Trekkies. George apparently brings his partner with him to conventions, but doesn't make a big deal out of it. I guess with the 40th anniversary coming up and all that, he's finally decided to come out. Good for him!

(If you've never seen him at a con, he often says, "oh, my" in this really deep, sexy voice.)

8. I mean really, was this a surprise? Datalounge had him pegged...
a loooong time ago.

A little to drama, and seeing him in some of the movies, you would of had to have your gaydar in the shop not to see it.

11. Makes no diff to me. One of my favorite post- 'Trek actors.
Out of all of them who choose to spoof the series, and themselves in real life, I think he's only second to Shatner.

There was an episode of "Third Rock from the Sun" that he was on, and can't remember all the details from it, but he was hilarious (something about a hotel the aliens were staying and racked up a huge tab for Takei's room)!

The best scene was when he was being hauled off by the hotel security (because he couldn't cover his tab), and he screams "but I'm George TAKEEEEIIIiii!"
