with no flashlight. The moon was bright when we started walking over the rocks. It was pitch black when we left.

It took a verrrrrrrry long time to get back to the car.

6. Descended Half Dome after dark.
It's actually hard to pick one, because I've done a LOT of incredibly stupid things in my life (fun, but stupid).

Probably the most dangerous what coming down from the top of Half Dome in Yosemite after dark. Anyone who has been up there should be familiar with the last stretch of the hike...a 45 degree climb over bare, open granite with nothing but a steel cable to hold onto. One slip and you're dead.

My wife and I went up there to watch the sunset, have a little fun, and watch the stars come out. When it clouded up, we realized that we'd forgotten a flashlight!

We did the descent after dark in pitch blackness (no moon) without any lights whatsoever. It took us 45 minutes to make what's normally a 10 minute descent because we had to do it entirely by feel. To make it worse, the temp had dropped to 40 degrees and it was WINDY.

#2 would probably be the time I put my skis on and had a friend pull me down a snowy roadway in the Sierra's. He thought it would be FUNNY to try and shake me off :eyes:

10. Drink a couple-three pitchers of beer, smoke a joint to clear my head
Then drive home at 4am - about 20 min @ 65-70 mph.

Luckily - no crashes/no injuries. Just a great deal of stupidity.

No bs, in 1972. Then did mushrooms for 41 straight days. Psilocybin from Arizona I picked up on the way back from CA. While working and doing all the normal things we do. I remember that instant as clear today as if I am seeing an azure sky.

13. The closest I've come to dying...
Edited on Wed Oct-26-05 09:45 PM by Redneck Socialist
I've done variations of much of what has been already listed, but the closest I've come to cashing it in was when, while hiking solo, I tried to ford a river that was a raging torrent from several days of heavy rain.

Obviously I didn't drown, but I was swept downstream quite a ways. Fortunately I washed up on the shore I was trying to get to and completed my hike without incident.

Scary stuff. :scared:

Sadly, that's about the extent of it for me, except for all the crazy shit we did on the farm with three-wheelers, motorcycles, four-wheelers, guns, beer, cigars, and fireworks.

19. Explored an abandoned mine in New Mexico
Just to get to the deeper levels you had to cross a void (the mine floor had long collapsed) via a single ore-cart rail for about 25' till you reached solid ground. The void was so deep flashlights would not penetrate to the bottom.

26. I have a couple.
Jumped off a bridge on the river at night - pitch black, couldn't see the water below. Actually climbing up the bridge was dangerous enough. I was 16.

Drove 115 mph on the interstate, for no good reason other than I was trying to catch up to someone. I was 19.

I'm sure there are others, but those two are the first to come to mind.
