4. BMI is such a crock.
It doesn't take muscle mass into consideration. I'm not obese, but by the BMI standard I am. Screw that.

8. That's my point.
I'm not muscle-bound by any means, but I'm nowhere near obese either. My doctor told me not to sweat the BMI. He said I'm in pretty good shape overall.

32. My Doctor Said The Same Thing
BMI has never worked for me. When I was in the best shape of my life I looked good, and had a 34 waist and was 5'11". I was athletic and particpated in sports, primarily Rowing. I could run up 50 flights of stairs, take the elevator down, and run them again.

Yet the BMI said I was obese because I weighed 215 pounds. I wasn't massively muscular or anything, I'm just big boned, and barrel chested.

So now, i'm a bit fatter, and I accept that I'm overweight, though I really should get that back down, but I just ignore the BMI which says I should weigh 160 pounds or something to be in shape. I honestly think I would die before I weighed that much.

7. You're right. Following that chart, my husband is 28.9,
and he has practically no flab on him-- he's just got a very big build and a LOT of muscle mass.

9. You're dead right. It also
doesn't take into accout what bodytype one is (endomorph, mesomorph, ectomorph).

I'm morbidly obese according to my BMI.

20. You're right. It isn't healthy.
A bmi most often isn't a choice and in my case, definitely so. I have serious, on-going health issues with which I struggle daily.

People can be just as presumptive, scornful and cruel about one's being underweight as they can about one's being overweight.

22. it's even worse.
I was always small. You can't complain about being thin. people always bitch about being fat.

I used to wonder if I was underwieght. I'ld be in health class in middle school and you would always hear testomony from an anorexic they'd say "at one point I only weighed 98 lbs

I'ld think I only weigh 85 is there something wrong with me?

when I said this to my mom she said "don't worry she was probably taller than you" (this was probably true. I was realy short I had to stand in my locker to reach the shelf with my books)

for a while their I was scared.

28. No fooling about that presumptive shit
I was with an extremely slender friend of mine up on Broadway a few years ago in that shopping mall thingy that is the QFC now, and some gal popped out of a shop there and said to my friend "I hate you. You're so SKINNY!" My friend wasn't as astonished as I was but I piped up and said "Yeah the docs say she'll fatten up a bit-as soon as the chemo stops! Then you can stop hating her."
She was working for the city and a MORBIDLY OBESE woman in the office was making her life hell. My friend is naturally slender, and even when she had hypothyroidism, she gained maybe 3-4 lbs.

I come off as overweight on that thing, but my docs are happy with my weight-I put 100 lbs in the weight box to come up with 18.3-I have weighed that much in the past and I look perfectly scary and on death's door at that weight.

I didn't realise you had health concerns, SOteric. I'm sorry. I hope it is something that can be resolved.

overweight...which I can't argue with.

Not sure I agree with the BMI, though, as muscular people end up being rated more overweight than they should be.

33. 38.4 Beat That!
I am overweight, I'll admit it, but i'm not really as bad as it seems. I'm a big guy, and even when I was in super shape (as I mention in an above post) I was still considered obese.

My best shape of my life, thin (34 waist was comfortable) and in good shape (could run 100 floors of steps) my BMI was still 30.0 which marked me as obese (I weighed 215 pounds)

So I don't really pay much attention to the BMI. I know where my healthy weight is. I'd be happy if I got down to about 235. I look pretty thin at that range and fit into size 36 pants.

34. No offense. I know this is the lounge and therefore not much is to
be taken seriously, but this bmi index is a load of crap. First of all, it does not take into account muscle mass. So, at my height and weight, it says that I am clinically obese even though I wear a size eight.

People shouldn't be so concerned about their weight, but whether or not they are fit. And, this is coming from someone who weighed herself three times a day thinking her value as a person was somehow tied to the number on a scale.

I'm sorry for seeming as if I am going off on a silly test, but too many people in this country suffer needlessly from eating disorders and a lot of it has to do with being falsely told by tests, whether a bmi score or a silly test in Glamour magazine, that they are overweight. Coupled with magazines, television and other media depicting too skinny people as reflecting the ideal body type, no wonder so many of us have issues with body image and low self esteem.

*steps off soap box*

You're not alone. A few of us are saying that. It's total garbage becuase it doesn't take body type into consideration. I was in great shape and I had a BMI that still said I was obese.
