Old-timers, check in.
Edited on Tue Oct-25-05 02:36 AM by WilliamPitt
I showed up here for the first time on May 21st, 2001. My first post was an incoherent blither about Gore and the 2000 election. Crewleader, the stoutest Gore defender to be found anywhere, ignored my rant and welcomed me to DU with a warm embrace.

Tell me your story.

Oh, PS, if you showed up just last week, but have been throwing down in GD with regularity, you count as an old-timer. You already know everything there is to know. ;)

Nader sucks. Nader rules. Vincent Bugliosi is God.

Yeah, I remember.

3. checking in
I came to DU about late September-early october of 2001. I used to read Bushwatch daily. One day I read a really nice essay post-911 by someone named William Rivers Pitt. A couple weeks later I saw another essay by him, and clicking on it brought me to DU.

That brought me here, and I saw there were actually people posting and discussing things rather than just essays and articles I could read.

Fascinated, I've been here ever since, though I still read much more than I post. I've definitely learned a lot in the past four years.

:hi: (and thanks)

5. Been here since 02
I used to do religious debate on a regular basis online. Due to a shift in jobs I found myself without the time to commit to the debate. So I gave it up.

Spent some time wandering around. I found that much of what I had been arguining alongside the religious issues were the political aspects that we were beset by. So I started examining more and more politlical sites. Eventually found my way here. Been here ever since. I have had my doubts about the Dems in the time since I have been here, but I have decided that it's a party worth fighting for and reclaiming it's identity.

6. Been here as "billyskank" since 2002
I lurked for a while before that. Back then GD was more like the Lounge is now, except without the most inane threads and more politics. You could talk about anything there, but nowadays it moves too fast so only the most popular topics survive. I suspect that's why so many have retreated to the Lounge.

Is it possible to find out what date we got our accounts? Newer people have their signup dates recorded in their profiles, but ours just say "2001" or "2002". :(

10. that's what I thought too
the old lounge was more cliquey than now in my memory it was mostly insider stuff about yaks. GD is now more like LBN, going through these phases of 'what's hot now'.
Before there was a 'my posts' feature, it was hard to find out if someone had responded to your post, except for immediate responses.
My first post, although I cannot find it in the archives was in reply to a Kansan who complained that he/she felt alone in Kansas. I said 'there were over a thousand of us marching in Lawrence on a very cold February day to oppose the Iraq war so do not feel so alone'.
Lots of people have come and gone since then. I cannot even remember who half of my old friends and enemies are.

However most of the old-timers have been very tolerant and supportive of this old newbie.

I was looking up info on bush and the death penalty when I stumbled onto this site through a link on another. A thread in GD about standardized testing caught my eye so I joined because I wanted to respond to it. I didn't think I'd post again. I purposely picked a screen name that didn't reveal my gender because before DU I had never seen a discussion board where I didn't have to worry about being threatened or begged to "cyber". Once I realized my inbox wasn't filling with vicodin and porn spam I decided to stay around.

Started reading DU September 2002 after following a link from another site. Signed up under my old user name (#11,872 I just found out) November 2002. Been my current username since March 2004.
GD makes me crazy most of the time now and I avoid it (an effort in futility/repeating what others say/troll tolerance most of the time it feels). I tend to be a proverbial lizard who reads LBN.

edit: I remember when spellcheck wasn't a feature. :silly:

41. Joined up here approximately March to April 2002
I had been searching for a progressive site such as DU for a long time but had been unaware that such a site even existed. I had given up hope of ever finding a progressive community online but I was becoming more and more disillusioned with * and co and needed somewhere where I could express my feelings.

One day I was just feeling sick of all the nonsense that the RW was spewing about Bill Clinton so I googled something like "Bill Clinton was a good President" and it came up with a pro-Clinton site (whose name I have forgotten unfortunately and it was on my old computer so I can't find the link) which contained a link to DU. I started posting immediately and I loved the site. The Lounge was much smaller then and it was much easier to get to know people and forge relationships and friendships. Maeve and ZenLefty were the Lounge moderators when I joined and they made me feel welcome and at home.

2002 was a difficult year for most of us -the tragic and premature death of Paul Wellstone, the 2002 congressional elections and the lead up to war with Iraq. It was so wonderful having a community of friends who you could share your thoughts and innermost feelings about the state of the world with and where you could get so much encouragement, support and even love.

Heh...those were the days, weren't they.

I am sure that there were other posts of his that I read, but that one sticks out in my mind...just because I remember the "real" Underground.

Wonder whatever happened to Kali? That "Dirt" forum was the best!

Member #6296.

I think my first post was to chide someone who was incensed that Home Depot was giving military members a 10% discount. My response was that "I can see why we lost ground during the last election. We are arguing over trivialities." I think it kinda honked off the OP.

Funny thing, though, I've never gotten into a Nader/Clark/Dean/Kerry/Gore flame war in my entire time posting here...

And, BTW, Vince Bugliosi is not quite as bright as most people make him out to be - he believes most of the Warren Commission Report and the lone gunman theory.

and...thanks for the compliment. :-) Signed on~ Jan.2001

Hi Everyone, :hi:

I just got power back a few minutes ago and thanks for the e-mails.

Wilma was tougher then Charlie, Frances and Jeanne all put together, the winds were so strong here before she reached Florida. Brevard County got the strong winds from her northern bands that only strengthen has she moved across, you were right Mary it kicked our butts! We had three tornadoes not too far from us, we were lucky there. The rain amounts flooded alot of the area, again we were fortunate to be on higher level. I lost alot more shingles but this old roof made it through but my maple tree out back and some tropical plants did not. It could of been alot worse, we're OK!

Again we lucked out it wasn't the big Maple out front that needs to come down but one of the Maples that lost branches with the previous three hurricanes. It really got slammed by Wilma, she split her in half all the way down to the ground.

Let's hope Hurricane Wilma stays out to sea but I hear she's merging with that other storm and heading towards the north, my New England Friends and Family, be careful and stay safe, she's the worse. Has fast as Wilma was moving through Florida she gave us her strong winds and all the heavy rain constantly. And with all that activity, wind and rain for many hours before Wilma's landing made it difficult for alot of people flooding their homes and in some cases losing them entirely with the tornadoes.
This county also felt her last presence on her way out and I was glad to see Wilma GO!

Good-Riddance Wilma!

And I welcomed the cool dry air we feel now to clean up the mess!
Got to go, there's alot to do!

Hugs Friends!:grouphug:

Love, Crewleader/ Toni Marie

118. Sort-of an old-timer here.
At least, I was around a lot last year through the primaries, the election, and its horrible aftermath. More reading than posting, but I was a pretty intense addict - it wasn't uncommon for me to loiter around in the Lounge all night and then greet the sunrise. Lack of time, an aggravatingly slow connection, burn-out from the emotional roller-coaster invariably engendered by DU, and a new baby dog all finally conspired to keep me absent for many months.

Today was the first day I've been tempted to poke my head back in, hoping for more info about Darth Cheney's fall from the pinnacle. (I'm not getting my hopes up, but it's nice to dream.) Good to see lots of names I still recognize. I'll be in and out sporadically. Trying to limit the addictive all-nighters and emotional roller-coasters. :)

Should have been here much earlier for my mental health. It's weird that I never found this place given that I lived on Buzzflash. I came here because of you, Will, but I stayed because of all your friends here. I may not always agree but I can always learn something here. Even in the lounge. :)

I ran a political website, The Adam Clymer Fan Club, during and shortly after the 2000 election. While compiling a links page, I found DU and signed up. That must've been January 2001 since I closed up shop after Valentine's Day of that year.

Maybe '03, can't really remember at this time, so I'm not really sure if that makes me an old timer or not, but I'm sort of an old timer in life. lol. I was drawn to this site by the top 10 list and delved deeper into it and said, "This is all right." Agree with some, disagree with some, but always defend one's right to say their piece.

Edited on Tue Oct-25-05 09:54 PM by Hardrada
The next thing I recall was the loss of the election in 2004 for which I was NOT personally responsible. I never intended to do anything wrong. I thought, at the time, that it was the right thing to do. To join DU, I mean. It was just something everyone was doing at the time. You have to understand what things were like when I joined. There had been a great depression and we though that the DU would restore our morale and put as back to work. And we had lost faith in our government. I thought that by supporting DU I was doing what i could for our homeland. If I have been personally guilty of excessive zeal in these pursuits, I ask the pardon of this court and throw myself upon your mercy and ask you to think what YOU would have done if you had been in my place. Thank you.

154. I wanted an odd number but I guess I timed it wrong
#15424, which equated to September 2002, as I recall.

I stumbled upon this site while researching political odds on the 2002 midterms, admittedly for wagering purposes since I'm part of a 16-man election pool every two years. There was a DU post listing supposed election odds compliments of Ron Faucheaux, who gets plenty of national press but has no clue regarding actual probability. His percentages are ridiculously low, for the most part. He'll list candidates as minor favorites when the race is so lopsided you can't find an offshore joint or bookmaker to even quote a price.

Anyway, there was a DU thread highlighting his odds. I stewed for nearly a day waiting for someone to assail the numbers as absurd, but when no one did I finally signed up and posted a reply, "Ignore those laughable odds." Two DUers welcomed and greeted me. One was Frances. The other one wrote, "Dude, I didn't even understand half of what you wrote, but post more often!" That response busted me up and I decided to stay.

171. I've been here since the beginning of 2003.
I'm not sure of the exact date, but I know that I was here well before Bush*'s illegal, bloody and costly war! I remember the lead-up to the war and actually felt physically ill, once they launched "shock and awe." I just didn't believe that there was any way Bush* could get away with this...:grr:

And I sure wouldn't have survived the last election, without DU!;(

But I discovered politics after 9/11 happened. I had a dentist appointment that day, and I was running late (as usual), and knew something really terrible had happened, but didn't actually see the footage of that second plane hitting, over and over and over, on CNN, until I was held hostage in my dentist's chair. I stumbled out of her office, scared witless, but determined to wake up and learn what was really going on in this country and in the world. I'd always voted, usually for Democrats, but never paid all that much attention. 9/11 taught me that complacency was no longer an option...:grr:

As for my first post, I don't remember that, either, except that I was kind of nervous, never having been on any kind of message board before. But, and I will never forget this, that one-person DU welcoming committee, newyawker99, welcomed me on my very first post. That meant so much, and I'm always reminding her how grateful I was for this. And the rest, for me, 11,000-some posts later, is history...:D

173. I think my official day was sometime in June
or July of 2001. I had been hanging out at a couple of Yahoo groups, most notorious of which was the "I Hate George Bush Fan Club" of which I guess there were numerous incarnations. I also had some other boards which were gen boards, but had political forums, so we talked some there.

I don't recall what I first posted about, as with the different boards I went to, I might have just been passing on some info from one group to the next.

The Yahoo boards were worse than this one when it came to speed of time. With only one "forum" everything was posted in the same place, and if you skipped a day, you had over 200 plus posts to catch up on. I remember 9/11 though, because some of the members were in NYC, and I recall hearing from them, and trying to see if anyone I knew had been hurt. I think we were lucky with some of the people, though.

DU is still not my only lifeline, though, and I have a lot of other places I "mind" but the old Yahoo boards were fairly fun before I discovered DU.

Sometimes GD gets too intense for me and I come here to hang out. I'm pretty moderate politically and so the angry young men over there can get wearing!

started posting in Jan of 02.

Started primarily in LBN.

Back then (fewer than 10,000 posters) mile markers per posts went up every hundred. Never got a response - until 1000 - by Uly. I was thrilled that someone noticed my commentary... 'til I realized he was a lounge mod and probably just being nice. :D

First DU gathering was in the summer of 02; pulled together by our beloved and greatly missed Keph.

Was instrumental in another one when the local peace group was able to bring someone of note to speak in town (nudge, nudge the original poster of this thread) - to this day I take credit (for which I really shouldn't) for the meeting of two Duers who are now an inspirational couple for many.

But I don't mention what I have loved the most - the great analysis of news, the great minds linking together many news stories together, and a place where deep policy discussions can flourish.

i found DU right after the last election when i knew it was fixed - i had visited other forums looking for people who felt the same as i did, found bbv.org forums, and they mentioned this place --- so i came over here and got addicted. my first post ever was in the first 'I Believe' thread in 2004 Election Results & Discussion, then i petitioned to start a John Kerry group, then a nice DU'er named Tom Kitten bought me a gold star out of the kindness of his heart :hi: i LOVE the sense of community here, one that i don't find on many other forums.

I know I was back sometime during the Jeffords defection. My biggest fear was the republicans would try and steal the NJ governor election somehow so they could then go after Torricelli and replace him with a repuke thus regaining the senate after the Jeffords defection.

So it's been 4 years!
