In Minnesota. In late October. Because "It's only eighty bucks a month!" He is not an alcoholic or a drug user. Last time I checked he was not mentally ill. He has a job. He is not broke, but he is stingy as hell. The storage unit is not heated nor does it have electricity. No one in the family seems to feel the need to intervene. What a bunch of freaks.

1. Is he a junior at St. Cloud State?
Edited on Tue Oct-25-05 12:01 AM by jpgray
His average blood-alcohol level in that instance would give him a very effective resistance to cold weather. :D

That's why I'm allowed to make fun of it. ;-) Have a few friends attending school at SCSU right now, as a matter of fact.

In the dorms my first year, in an apartment by the hockey arena, my second year. It was like high school, only with older kids. :eyes:

If you ever want to hang out at the Skatin' Place or listen to shitty bands at the Red Carpet, give me a ring. :hi:

(I make fun of St. Cloud all the time, and often thought its residents too dull or small-minded for words, but there are and were some great people there.)

30. Not the Corolla!
I already totalled the old Ford Tempo, and burned a cigarette hole in the back seat of the Taurus-- we'll probably have to borrow my Dad's truck. It's got a topper, so that presents more of a challenge.:bounce:

They don't allow that where I live
you spend more than an hour, they come a knocking on your door. And it's closed after 8PM. No cooking, pets, or animal parts allowed.

11. I once knew a guy so cheap...
that when he traveled, he didn't book hotel rooms. He just slept in banquet rooms under the tables and hoped no one would notice. :eyes:

In my opinion, extreme stinginess, cheapness, whatever you like to call it, is a mental disorder and stems from deeper issues.

Your husband's cousin may also be reluctant to admit how deeply the admin. he voted for has affected his wallet--and this is his way of dealing with it. Either way, if they aren't worried--don't put yourself out about it, either. Not worth your time or trouble.

You're a sweetheart to care, though.

16. I think he's got some sort of mental issues, too.
His Dad is crazy-thrifty. We used to laugh about how he took my husband and his brothers, all BIG, tall guys "out for lunch" at McDonald's. He'd only let them each get a little tiny hamburger and a water. Once, he produced a barely-wrapped doughnut from his coat pocket and offered it to them as some sort of "dessert."

21. Being raised that way
can have detrimental long term affects--not that I'm a professional. (LOL!) I'm very sorry to hear that.

But seriously, seeing someone spend so frugally on his own children, doesn't set the best example. It's one thing to be thrifty out of necessity, and if he sincerely didn't have it to spend on them, that's a whole other issue. But it's another issue altogether to be a tightwad to the extent of not even honoring basic needs.

I feel for the guy. It's awful to grow up like that. Sounds like now he's ignoring his own basic needs, because he wasn't taught that it mattered--he was taught money mattered more than he did(or at least that's what it sounds like).

My husband's parents were really frugal in some matters. Dh (miracle) is quite generous. But his brothers--oy! Talk about tight wads. They're psychos in that area, seriously...

32. OMG, there's oodles of stories about that guy.
He's really pretty sweet, but very quirky. He and his wife stayed with my In-Laws when my husband was thirteen. At the time, my husband had taken to rolling and smoking coffee grounds, and was hiding a baggie of coffee under his boxspring. It spilled all over the floor and his Mom found it. My husband blamed it on "grandpa," knowing he had odd hoarding issues. The hilarious part was that for some reason "grandpa" accepted responsibility for it! He seemed to think he must have shoved the coffee under the bed and forgot about it.

15. That's just it-- he HAD a place- just decided it was a "waste" of money.
He moved out and into the storage unit! Apparently, he goes out to eat for every meal, since he can't cook in the garage. How that's cost effective, I don't know. It's going to be way too cold for him to stay in there, within the next month.

20. You drank it wrong.
:eyes:

Your friend drinks two kinds of beer, Duvel and St. Ides High Gravity Malt Liquor. You find him passed out outside his house with an empty bottle of St. Ides in his hand and three empty Duvel bottles nearby. The bottle-opener is fifteen and one half feet away. What is the chance that a fourth Duvel exists somewhere inside his house?

23. OMG, are you going to open up that math thing again?
Because One of my buddies in the Math department thought it was a 1/3 vs. 2/3 split and took it to a probability theorist in the department. The probability theorist said the odds are 50-50.

The question as it was presented can't be answered, because having two kids you have a 2/3 chance of having a boy and a girl in some order, whereas you have only a 1/3 chance of having two boys. But at the same time since a household containing two boys would be more likely to provide a boy door-answerer, the chance of the other sibling being a boy has to be greater than just 1/3. I assumed, when I answered the question with 1/3, that it was ballet/softball/boy-killing practice time and that the only person who could possibly answer the door would be a boy. If girls can also answer doors, then my answer is fucked. How much greater than 1/3 is impossible to determine because human behavior enters into it. But a pair of boys are more likely to present you with a boy when you knock than a heterogenous pair.

29. If, in all certainty, he IS mentally competent, I agree,
he probably should be left to his own decisions. I'm just wondering what's up with the degree of wierdness he's presenting. At the basest level, it's simply unsafe or soon will be, with the temperatures dropping. I'm not sure what to think, really. My confusion with the family members involved is more in the fact that they don't seem to be intervening to at least ascertain his mental state.
