Buying American
Does anyone else do this?
For many products I buy at the store, I have started to look and see where the product is made and if one of the brands is made in the USA, I get that one instead of the Chinese or Taiwanese (sp?) alternatives.

I'm not too knowledgeable in economics, but its not such a bad idea, I dont think.

1. You're correct, it is a good idea.
Supporting American manufacturers is good for the economy.

9. The race actually started under Clinton after he pushed
through NAFTA and rallied for GATT.

Now, with NAFTA being fact companies are leaving low wage MEXICO because they can get cheaper wages in India and China.

Even the anti semite Henry Ford knew that it was wise business practices to pay people enough to buy the product they are making.

3. If there is a farmer's market nearby, patronize that too
Not only does it help keep money in your local economy, most, if not all, of the farmers are family farmers who do business at these places.

5. it's getting harder to do all the time but i think after factoring...

the likelihood that many of these products are only made elsewhere for american corporations, more so than we care to think about, perhaps we're 'buying american' already, just as a result of a global out-sourcing of employment for greater profit via lower labor cost which is another matter altogether; levi's for instance, auto & compu parts, Dell compu's & such while corporate being based in texas

10. No, I don't really care - generally, if I have a choice,
Edited on Sun Oct-23-05 05:53 PM by Rabrrrrrr
I will choose the European or Japanese made model/version of something, since I can be reasonably sure that it will be well made and not a piece of standard low grade American-made crap.

On the other hand, I don't buy very much stuff.

But if it's a choice between a crappy Chinese or Taiwanese thingy and a crappy American thingy, I'll go American, as long as the prices are similar.

13. When I can
If a "Made in America" product isn't available, I try to at least purchase the "Made in Cheap-Foreign-Labor-Country" item from a local store/company instead of a BigBoxMart style store.
