Library Book Sale - how did I do?
A bag of books for $2, I got
Hardcover
Max - by Howard Fast
God's Children - by Harold Coyle
The Classic Philip Jose Farmer 1952-1964 by Kilgore Trout
What is Vital in Religion - by Harry Emerson Fosdick 1955
Backlash - by Susan Faludi (already partially read in 1999)
A history of Modern Germany 1871-present by Dietrich Orlow
The Masters of Solitude - by Marvin Kaye (this one I read half of from a library and then could not remember the title until I stumbled on it again about 15 years later at a different library)
This Immortal - by Roger Zelazny (read long ago)

paperback
The Last Defender of Camelot - by Roger Zelazny (I almost did not get this, because I am sure I have a copy already, but right now I cannot find the copy I thought I had)
Partners in Wonder by Harlan Ellison et. al.
Once on a time by AA Milne
The Well at the World's end by William Morris (never knew this existed but tragically all I found there was Volume II)
Mere Christianity by CS Lewis (read long ago)
Project Pope by Clifford D Simak (read long ago)

Also got some other odds and ends like "Jerry Kramer's Farewell to Football" for my "friend" who collects sports books.
As a former bookstore owner, I have a house full of books that I do not read. Will I have read any of these new ones before the next book sale where I get another bag of books?

1. one of the things i most adore
Edited on Mon Oct-17-05 01:07 PM by faithnotgreed
is a book sale esp at the library

i recently lived an takoma park and decided within minutes that i wanted one day to "own" it

not in a literal power sense but because they had so many quirky books i would never have time to read everything i wanted to unless i was able to check out books at any time

have fun
i also have a ton of books from various sales and basically have no more room for any additional books
how sad is that
there must always be room for more books....

on edit: it really is great that you got all that for $2 or so
hope you enjoy every one of them
i love finding an old aa milne

9. that was alot of fun too
when I went to grad school, there were piles of books in the hallways as profs cleaned out their offices or moved or retired. I got more education from there and the library than I did in the classes. At least of things I wanted to learn.

2. Sweet!
I love the Zelazny & Morris titles... haven't read those but I've read others by them and loved them.

Enjoy! :D

4. You should read "For Breath I tarry"
a short story in "The Last Defender of Camelot". The title story is good too, and was made into an episode of the new Twilight Zone (of the late 1980s early 90s) that was quite good too.
The Morris find was great. I so loved "News from Nowhere" but I cannot read it until I find out if the library has volume I, or I can check the local used bookstores.

8. Grrrr
Amazon just ripped me off of $25 this weekend, so we have some things to sort out before I give them another dime.

5. Book sales are amazing!
I know how you feel, though. I've got an ever-growing stack of books I've been meaning to read, but it's all forgotten whenever I hear about a book sale. :)

10. I sorta love/hate them
As a bookstore owner, I used them to stock up my supplies, but also, they were state-sponsored competition. People donate really nice books to them, but they always wanted me to pay for books 999 times out of 1000. Sure libraries are free if you can manage a two week return, and I actually sold things from time to time, but my local library had a $70,000 budget and a million dollar building. Whereas I had gross sales of about $18,000 (much of which came from tourists BTW, and was working two jobs buying a building in the decimated downtown. (at one point, I put in an ad that I was the oldest business on my side of the street between the bank and the drugstore, which was true.) A little support people, and that little town might still have a bookstore that did not belong there).

11. Missed our library book sale recently
And said to my (non-reading) girlfriend "damnit, I missed the book sale today!"

She slowly looked around my tiny apartment which is wall-to-wall with books and said "Uh, Pattie, I don't think 'not enough books' is one of your pressing problems'."

12. but you never know
I had a ton of books before I went to the sale, but I did not have a copy of Backlash or The Master's of Solitude. At the sale before this I scored a Statistical Abstract of the US 2001 which is immensely useful to me.

14. you mean I should read it and e-bay it?
I almost did not get that one, but there was a collaboration with Roger Zelazny. Might be some others in there too.

15. I have to be near the head of the line the first day or night
ALWAYS as an active bookseller. Stuff I want is gone after first half hour usually. Even at very big sales.

16. You can try ebay
The Absolutely Weird Bookshelf has worn out copies going for about $10 right now. I'd hold on to it for a couple years and see if it goes up.

17. wow,
and my copy could pass for a new book. Maybe I should not even read it. I might crease the spine.

18. Excellent work
Edited on Tue Oct-18-05 04:23 AM by BuffyTheFundieSlayer
I browsed my way through a quaint little used-book store in Provincetown last week and got copies of Schindler's List and What Liberal Media?, both in mint condition.
