Who buys old LPs just for the groovy covers? I hate estate sales because
they are too depressing but I reluctantly stopped at one winding down and grabbed a stack old lps (60's/70's) Miguelito Valdez, Vincente Ferndnadez, Nat Kong Cole Olga Guillot. CD buyers and downloaders really miss out on the zen of the album cover.

1. Some records I bought just for the covers:

It's a great cheap hobby - not one of those cost me more than 50¢ or $1.00.

Scandinavian pop songs from the 20s and 30s.

5. Really? That sounds cool.
Maybe I'll listen to it tonight - I still haven't actually heard any of those.

Ernest “Slim Jim” Iverson
Inducted 2003

Famed and loved throughout the region for country music and Scandinavian songs like “Nikolina” and “The Drifting Vistling Snow,” he was born to Norwegian immigrants in North Dakota in 1903. Injured while working in the Texas oil fields in 1925, he turned to music, and was dubbed “Slim Jim” by his Wichita Falls, Texas, radio station for his lean, six-foot, four-inch frame. In 1927 he moved to WAAU Omaha, Nebraska, appearing as the “Master Troubadour” before becoming “Slim Jim” again at WRHM (now WWTC) Minneapolis/Saint Paul in 1932. Broadcasting with his brother Clarence (“The Vagabond Kid”), his noontime program was a favorite throughout the 1930s, ‘40s, and ‘50s on several Twin Cities and regional stations, including WDGY, KSTP, WLOL, and KEYD. He also appeared on experimental WDGY telecasts in the 1930s, and hosted the hour-long “Slim Jim’s Westerners” on what is now KMSP TV Minneapolis/Saint Paul in the 1950s. His death in 1958 was mourned by legions of fans.

7. Estate sales weird me out too.
On the one hand, the prospect of buying cool stuff, or something you need inexpensively is great (garage sales are very unlikely to be selling off kitchenware, for example.) But it certainly is weird to be walking through the leftovers of a life. If it's obviously an old person I don't mind so much but one I went to was very obviously the estate of a young man and I felt very strange. It makes me think a lot about our lives and our relationships with "stuff." Mostly it makes me want to sell off my stuff, especially the useless gadget stuff.

Oh, and OT: and I do like old LP covers too, but I don't buy them. :)

9. Oh just wait until I get back.
I'll take some pictures of some covers that go from the the 50's to the 90's. Vicente Fernandez? Wow. That guy must have 300 albums to his name.

10. I'm not sure I ever bought one JUST for the cover.....
but I do agree the MP3 generation is missing out on important aspects of music: Cover art and liner notes. Think about Zappa and Pink Floyd albums. They'd have contained good music regardless, but I can remember spending hours listening to the music while dissecting the minutiae on the covers and reading about the musicians.

12. I have a few albums that I bought just for the cover.
They're all album covers that were discontinued or dropped for one reason or another.

They have a little collectors value (nothing more than $30.00).
